I guess I see your point, but anytime it’s brought up, it seems you always feel a need to go off about it. It kinda makes me feel the same way, you do when people go off on games you like. I dunno.
 

 
Oh believe me, others do. I’ve seen just as many people bash “Generations” as those that praise it. I guess you don’t notice them, ‘cause you don’t go to the same fan-circles I do. On DeviantArt, people either really love the game, or really hate the game, with hardly anyone in the middle. I admit I am probably the only person that prefers the 3DS version though. That version literally gets no love. (Love it’s remix music of “Big Arm.”)
 
Curiously, is there anything you like bout “Generations,” and dislike about ‘06?  
One thing I will say about Generations I dislike is, how you speed up way too quickly, and some of the platforming could’ve been better. The 3DS version’s speed builds up more gradual like most Sonic games, which is partially why I prefer it.

The models. I have no real issues with the 06 models and style, but I like how the Generations ones look more. Tho this is more a factor or modernity. Still, good models, shame that most of them don’t get to do much.
 
I have yet to play the 3DS version (because I keep forgetting about it) but I wanna try it some day, if only to say I did.

The 3DS Eshop sometimes has it for sale for $10 during discount sales.  
The modern Sonic plays a bit like the DS versions, so if you like “Sonic Rush” you might like it, though there’s a bit less emphasis on the boost feature. (And the trick feature is gone, I guess to nerf/balance & simplify it a bit.) Classic Sonic also feels more accurate to the old games to me then the console version, and I like how the game progresses he can learn some of modern Sonic’s moves, like the homing attack.
 
I also prefer some of the level/boss choices, (like Casino Night Zone instead of Chemical Plant) and they recreated the 3D bosses like the Egg Emporer boss (from “Heroes”) well in a sidescrolling way.
 
My only gripe with the 3DS game I kinda wish it had a Game Gear or GBA stage, seeing how it has a few DS ones. The online VS mode is also surprisingly choppy, (to the point it seems unfinished) and not as smooth as most online DS or 3DS games.  
Other then that, I like it, and honestly prefer it over the TV/PC version. I also like how it looks in 3D.

I would like to know how to get into Sonic’s lore and stories.

More like they start off after the events of “Forces,” though kinda have their own canon, but you don’t need to read every issue to enjoy them.
 
The old Archie Sonic series is good too (regardless what some say) if you want more lore, as it mixes the game canon, TV cartoon canons, and even some of it’s own unique canon too. Sadly, they’re out of print though even the reprint collection books.

I’d say start with Sonic 2, then 3. If you want a crash course in characters, maybe try Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006, or “Sonic ‘06”) and Sonic Advance 3. After that, you can go to Sonic Generations and Forces. Or, if you can arrive at a movie late and still follow it, skip them and start the IDW comics. There are currently 32 issues of it (and 4 of the spin-off), so it shouldn’t take too long to get caught up. As long as you have some idea about the characters and the Chaos Emeralds, it does a pretty good job catching you up on the rest.
 
I’ve never read the Archie run, but I’m sure Dex Stewart’s recommendation is a good starting point. I can’t promise you’ll enjoy every game and issue. They’re just to get you going on this version of the lore.  
The movie, cartoons, anime and OVA are a whole separate thing, and I’m…pretty sure the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics games aren’t canon.

Generations* and Forces are NOT going to do shit for story for anyone. At least not until learning everything that came from them, but they don’t teach anything beyond “there’s two sonics because reason” and “tails is a pussy now”. When it comes to comics, I read random issues in a random order and I managed to only be somewhat confused because I read so much wiki stuff to get up to speed.
 
*I said AND, I gave Forces shit too, and I don’t even dislike Forces as much as others do!

I mostly mentioned Forces because the comics bring up what happens in it a lot and I thought a newcomer reading about a war in which Sonic was temporarily ‘lost’ might be confusing. Similar for Generations, since having a second Sonic in Forces and nobody really questioning it without the context, such as it is, could be a bit strange.  
But yeah, if there’s no intent to read the IDW series, those games can be skipped.

Maybe she’s like Geno from Super Mario RPG. The swiss-army fingers are a bit reminiscent of his finger gun.

huh, kind of interesting, I never really cared for robotic characters honestly, so I’m not sure how to feel about her yet, just have to wait and see her personality first I guess
