I can totally imagine a large Russia region that is divided into sections (much like the islands of Alola) that the player can zip to and from via the Trans-Siberia Railway equivalent of the region as with each section of the region becoming accessable as the player progresses in game.
 
The train rides will be like the ship rides of early generations. Trainer battles, activities, etc on board. It will be different every time
