Decided to make a new profile in celebration of this year’s Halloween, even if it is a week early.
Runescape’s holiday event has been in full effect for the last week or-so, and I’ve been having a lot of fun getting the numerous rewards from it so far, as well as from the handful of events from Touhou Lost Word.
I had a lot of fun writing this, even if it’s taken me two/three hours, and I hope you all have a wonderful week/Halloween/All Hallows/holiday.
Wandering the fringes of Agua’s domain, Pelagia is often seen with a wide variety of oceanic familiars at her command, where she works as one of Agua’s Court mages as well as a Resident Guardian.
Her duties as Court Mage are often viewed as being similar to those of Ingracia’s many Guilds, while her work as a Resident Guardian is exactly as it sounds- protecting Lokiry and all who inhabit it from threats, both external and internal, be they supernatural magically-inclined or otherwise.
The beacon on her staff is formed of crystallized light, and kept in a glassy container that both refracts and amplifies thaumic energy. Its main use by Pelagia is a guiding light to help travellers and wanderers find safety in Lokiry’s boundaries, also warding off any potential threats or attackers, keeping them at bay as her numerous familiars or allies keep them from going after her instead.
Her appearance, abilities and skillsets are each part of the result of a tumultuous event, commonly referred to as the ‘Awakening of the World’, which occurred a little over several millennia ago, ending with the sudden release of inhuman amounts of mana from numerous locations around the world.
In large part, the event resulted in the plethora of bestial, monster-like entities roaming the more dangerous parts of Ingracia, hence the tank-like freight trains made and used in and around Kel’Zek, and other similar cities and locations.
Many of Ingracia’s denizens were forcibly changed by the event, with most being given a new ability or form of magic, with others having their innate capabilities or potential kick-started into existence, granting them a list of capabilities that would have otherwise been unknown to them.
In Pelagia’s case, she was merged with a large number of aquatic beings she was in the process of conjuring for further study, gaining enhanced senses, agility, strength, durability, among others. During the first few years since the event, she has found another several abilities, notably including the abilities belonging to the creatures she was fused with.
Among them, she has a sort of camouflage, rubber-like flexibility, an iron, vicelike grip, exceptionally-powerful venom, shark-like teeth, regeneration, and the ability to, in a sense, disassemble herself and move almost like a shoal of fish-like entities, reforming herself later.
Due to her multitude and powers, and her adept skill in using them against potential invaders, Pelagia has since been granted the title of Konahrik, a pre-Awakening word for Warlord, as well as her signature quarterstaff, being tasked with ensuring Lokiry’s safety and wellbeing, as well as those residing within its walls and borders.
After detailing it with numerous markings and runes, the Hydromancer now uses it both in magic and melee combat, imbuing it with a fair amount of mana to reinforce it during the latter.
Pelagia’s hydromancy allows her to temporarily alter the state of the water around her, which she often uses to craft all manner of knives, daggers, swords and the like, as well as give her staff a bladed tip, not unlike that of an intricately-forged halberd.
In regards to her demeanour, Pelagia is often thought of having a sharp mind and an even sharper wit, usually bantering with those around or close to her, as well as making other such remarks, with a sort of ‘I kid because I care’ attitude to most of her usual behaviour.
Aside from her usual breaks, where a few of Agua’s other mages and Resident Guardians take over her shift, Pelagia will also take however much time she has to explore Lokiry during the holiday events, most notably All Hallows, where her laundry list of spells are often the focus of many of the inhabitants’ shock and awe.
While not one to usually partake in a few of the more notable events, she will often be found venturing between each town, city or such, taking whatever gifts or sweets those she guides after doing so, before donating them to the less fortunate during the festivals or events, keeping a relatively small amount for herself.
Her other activities throughout All Hallows usually involve storytelling- regaling the younger audiences with tales of myths and legends from ages long-since passed, or playing or getting involved with the various pranks that are sometimes carried between Lokiry’s denizens. Pelagia, upon encountering the chronicler, was at first a little sceptical, having never seen their particular form of magecraft or sword-wielding ability, deciding to examine it for herself through a light sparring contest.
While she eventually won, many of the those who spectated the event agree that Pelagia was able to learn something about how to improve and adapt her various abilities, as well as more about the outside world above-ground, having discussed with the Chronicler at-length about numerous topics both before and after their spar.
Having been particularly interested in the events which took place after the awakening, and her subsequent transformation, Pelagia was stunned to find out about the likewise emergence and development of many people’s latent abilities, spells and the like, as well as the systems put into place after the initial chaos started to dwindle.
She then guided them to Agua, whereupon they were both swiftly rewarded for their work, the chronicler in particular granted freedom to travel from anywhere within Agua’s dominion, as well as to trade and barter with any of its shop owners and free perusal of its many libraries, archives and records, within a certain amount of reason.
After helping see them off on their venture to the surface, specifically in Cartuga’s direction, Pelagia has since returned to her duties, doubling her efforts in ensuring the Lokiry’s safety and wellbeing, now with a somewhat more open mind, regarding those she finds on their way into one of the gateways dotted around the borders.
Having likewise diversified the spells she is can cast effectively, many of its populace have taken a far greater shine to her various performances and shows during the holiday events, and those she helps travel between towns or cities donate larger offerings every now and then, only for them to be met with the same result as before.
Trick or treat~
If anyone asks, the ‘Warlord’ title is a reference to one of my most beloved franchises, circa 2007, and her newfound powers are another reference/callback to the same franchise, in the exact same year. Her conjuration powers make the third callback, due to the League of Six Kingdoms’ ability to summon hordes of sharks, eels, and the like, ranging from minnow to castle-sized, but often bigger.
As for her being a court mage… her overall appearance reminded me of one of my all-time favourite RPG’s, Wadanohara, where the main characters are the various Sea Witches and their respective familiars, both current and former.
It’s a bit of a classic niche game, with numerous endings with an equal number of routes.
If anyone’s ever heard of Mogeko Castle, it’s by the same developers as that, as well as a few other, similar games.
