I decided to make another profile, and this time it’s for one of Ingracia’s kingdoms, rather than one of its denizens. I’ve never really done this sort of world-building before, I don’t think, so this is basically my first, and hopefully not last attempt, even if I might have gone a bit overkill with the word count.
I’ve had a lot of fun writing this, and I hope you all have a wonderful day.
Of all the kingdoms on Ingracia, Kel’Zek is arguably one of the most industrious, its many forges, perpetually ablaze with sparks and molten metal being moulded into shape. The Kingdom lies at the heart of the mountain range far east of Gal-Garth, and is internally layered with numerous defensive spells to keep the mountain stable and prevent its upper half from giving way and crushing everything beneath it.
Among The Kingdom’s greatest exports are be the valuable gems, trinkets and jewellery, as well as the hundreds, if not thousands of new weapons and armour sets or pieces that are crafted and sold almost-daily. The Kingdom itself is well over twelve thousand years of age, and has since been given an especially-designed portal network to allow for far greater travel between Ingracia’s other kingdoms, city-states and the like.
The Arexians that run the many stalls, vendors and stores within the kingdom’s market districts are well-renowned for their expansive variety of wares that are often seen at fairly decent prices throughout the course of the year, with some even visiting from other countries in the hopes of expanding their scope, for lack of better wording.
The currency used on Ingracia is known simply as ‘Rel’. The otherwise called ‘standard’ is a single, gold Rel, there is also a ‘middle’ or silver Rel, which is half a standard Rel, and finally, there is the ‘low’ or Bronze Rel, which often consists of one two five and ten.
To continue, there is also a ‘Low Platinum’ Rel, which is one, two hundred and fifty, or five hundred. The ‘Middle-platinum’ is one, two and a half, or five thousand, and the ‘High-Platinum’ is ten, or sometimes twenty thousand.
The coin’s name originates from Relka, who stands among her pantheon as one of Ingracia’s oldest deities. The most commonplace myth is that she was born into the form of a Dragon whose scales held infinite value or wealth, and was often coveted by nearly all who gazed upon her for them. Years quickly turned into decades, then into centuries, then into millennia, and as time passed, Relka grew weary of the longing gazes and such being aimed her way.
Realizing that the feeling of being hounded would continue until they had achieved what they had sought after for so long, she parted with them, flying high into the air before shedding her scales, leaving the comparably dull, blue-and-faded lavender ones she wore underneath. Watching them fall, Relka was quick to notice her scales had seemingly lost their once-renowned glow, and now appeared as her newfound ones.
Upon finding the scales, it took mere days for many of Ingracia’s denizens to find out who and where they had originated, and the scales, having been a part of her for so long, were then named after her, as a way of thanking her for the gift.
She has since become the patron Goddess to many vendors, merchants alike, and her shrines are often given donations of varying size, commonly in the form of however much of her namesake currency can be spared by those who visit.
Kel’Zek has perhaps one of the most well-known, with an alter set in front of a twelve-foot-tall statue, depicting a bipedal dragon with icy-blue eyes and midnight blue and faded lavender scales sat upon a veritable hoard of coins, gems and other similar items of interest.
Upon visiting, the first thing visitors will notice, is the seemingly-perpetual sound of often steel, reinforced iron or the aptly-named Relakite pickaxes striking rock, with thousands of members of the city’s local mining guild hard at work in Kel’Zek’s lower strata, spending many hours a week excavating however many precious minerals or gems they can acquire from the numerous veins of ore, crystals and the like which line the walls of their mountain-bound home.
The aforementioned Relakite is crafted from a number of Rel that have been merged to form an alloy of sorts, and then crafted into a specific tool or weapon. Such things are often perceived as a symbol or bringer of fortune, with many seemingly proving the superstition to be true.
Kel’Zek was originally founded many thousands of years ago, and was founded by a pair of Arexian Kings who had left their original home kingdom, itself long-since lost beneath the waves of time, in order to found their own country. Many years later, and they had each obtained a rather sizeable following, with the slightly older of the two, Deinmaar, opting to take care of the political side of ruling the newly-formed Kel’Zek, whereas the younger, Gudrun, was tasked with maintaining order and keeping their newfound home safe and secure.
Many tens of generations have passed since then, and both of their likenesses can be found in the matching statues that stand either side of the foot-thick gates leading into the almost fortress-like castle that Goljun now resides. His reign has been a noticeably prosperous one, and his trade deals and agreements with neighbouring kingdoms have each given Kel’Zek the ability to flourish like almost never before.
Also of note is the railway leading to and from Kel’Zek to the other nearby kingdoms. The Kel’Zekian end of the lines were laid down not long after a number of tunnels were carved through the mountain, each one being one of the few ways in or out of the kingdom, barring the intricately-crafted portal network. Many of the trains used on the lines are for transporting goods, while the rest are for passenger use by visitors and tourists alike. The freight locomotives, and the carriages they are designed to pull, are heavily armoured, built almost like fortresses, with engines to match.
Capable of speeds anywhere up to a little over a hundred kilometres an hour, they are designed with an especially-crafted inch-thick mesh lining the roof, giving anything unfortunate to land on it a several-thousand volt shock, if they are not properly equipped. The guard at the front vaguely resembles a bull’s horns, with a plough beneath it which was originally designed to move whatever collides with it clear from the tracks.
The turrets lining the sides are just as capable, each one firing one-and-a-half Aro bullets that are also enchanted to deal with whatever monstrous threats may emerge or pose a threat to the gems, minerals and the like that each carriage holds. Much of the technology was largely born of the usage of gems and crystals, enchanted or otherwise. A circuit is created, with the crystal acting both as either a trigger or a catalyst. A small amount of mana is used to begin the process, which then flows through the circuits which are designed and set in place, and this, in-turn, powers whatever mechanism or device is being used.
Likewise, there are various weapons that use a somewhat similar technology, with the turrets being an example. The circuits inside lining the housing assembly are fuelled by the mana from the crystals connected to the loading chamber. The thaumaturgy created by as a result of such a process can enchant the rounds fired by the weapon being used to greatly amplify the damage output, give them an elemental affinity, or even both.
Higher-tier spells involve creating multiple copies of any single round, doubling, tripling or quadrupling how much damage they are capable of, or granting whatever is being used ammunition-wise to pass through physical space to close the distance between the one firing and their target with an exceptionally shorter time-span.
Kel’Zekian engineers and scholars have also likewise been able to adapt this crystalline magical technology, often shorted to ‘Magitech’, to generate electricity, using panels constructed from ores and minerals in conjunction with the various crystals they mine. Each one is able to soak up and absorb the ambient thaumic energy in the air, which is then used to power the city’s rather sizeable number of streetlights, and the various appliances and gadgets in the homes of the kingdom’s populace, as well as the various schools, hospitals and such, and even the airships used to transport cargo from the various sky-ports around near the mountain’s summit.
A number of the kingdom’s workers utilize Forgebeasts in order to move large amounts of materials and/or supplies from one place in Kel’Zek to the next, giving them varying non-precious metals such as iron, nickel copper, tin or zinc in order to fuel the molten metal that greatly fuel their circuits and allows for greater functionality.
Among Kel’Zek’s numerous events which occur throughout the year, there is one that prospective visitors may very much wish to avoid the city when such is an event known simply as ‘The Honouring’. It occurs around the beginning of spring, during the first Vensul of yoriik (Friday and May, respectively) and often extends through the weekend and into the next week or so after it. Kel’Zek goes into a state of temporary lockdown, having planned ahead and bought what they may require beforehand, where nothing goes in or out throughout the duration of the event, and it is a celebration where the denizens, in their own words ‘The first day, we honour the mountain, that gives us everything. On the second day, we honour our family and our ancestors, who teach and help us to learn everything, and the third, we honour the Gods, who protect and guide us.’
Putting this into perspective, it would seem that at least a number of many of Kel’Zek’s populace revere their home, some even deifying it to a certain extent. They each hold their traditions close to their hearts, and their loved ones often closer; ‘loyalty is better than steel’ is a startlingly common proverb among the Forgemasters and craftsmen living in Kel’Zek, and one often alluded to among its ruling classes.
