There’s a nice thread up on smugchan’s monster board about sons of monsters and I’d like to share a series of recent excerpts:

Why though? Little boys love monsters.

(And I kind of doubt she needs her medicine every hour on the hour. Every night is probably sufficient unless there are other stressors present.)

giggle with glee as dad skitters up the cave wall
you hang on as tight as you can but dad always attaches you with some silk anyway
so annoying, you’re not a baby…
he occasionally stops so your little sister can catch up
he does his ‘stick bug dance’ while he waits
you both love that
after playing chase for a while he takes you two to the connecting tunnel to the nearby ant colony
he changes back to his true human form to do some shopping
this time little sister rides on his back, clinging to him with her spider legs, and you hold his hand
look wide eyed at all the stuff in the shops
dad even buys you ice cream!
he says that bug girls sure know their sugar
spend some more time playing in one of the ants’ parks
the chamber is shallow enough it gets sunlight through a big clear rock thing in the ceiling
there’s green grass and trees too!
little sister is always scared of the light at first but you give her lots of hugs and she feels better
dad changes into a human to throw a ball around with you
changes into a spider to chase you around
it’s so much fun!
you’re pleasantly exhausted when you get home
mommy is pacing around anxiously and biting her knuckles when you get there

< “YOU’RE LATE! I was worried sick! What if something had happened to my babies?! Don’t you care about me at all?!”

you hate it when mommy gets like this
dad explained it to you though
mommy is sick
mommy’s sickies makes her sad and angry sometimes
when that happens she needs dad to take care of her
it’s up to you to be a big boy and watch over your little sister while he does that
when they come back mommy is always normal again
you also found out that mommy will be sort of normal in an emergency too
one time your little sister almost choked on a toy
mommy and daddy heard your screaming and showed up instantly
mommy ran up and hit little sister in the gut with magic
you thought her sickies were making her crazy but it made little sister cough up the toy
and puke a little
you were so scared and ashamed you let something bad happen to your little sister
but mommy and daddy gave you both lots of hugs and you felt a little better
mommy seemed mostly normal then
but she was a little frantic and jittery
kind of brittle, like she was holding something back
but you know that mommy will always be there for you when you really need her
since then dad must have figured out a way to make mommy’s sickies go away faster
now he just grabs her and comes back pretty quick
sometimes mommy yells at him and tries to hit him when he does that
dad tells you that you shouldn’t treat a woman that way normally
but mommy is sick
you know the routine by now
open up little sister’s toy chest and play with her for a while
end up playing girly tea party with stuffed animals
lame
but you always play whatever she wants to when this happens
dad says that little sister will get the same sickies as mommy when she gets older
that makes you sad but dad says that also means she’ll be ready to be a mommy and will need a husband
he says he’s proud of you for being such a big boy and being so good with her all the time
he says he wants her to never be scared of boys
he thinks that will make it easier for her and make her sickies not so bad
mommy and daddy come back pretty soon as usual
mommy looks like she’s been crying
she gives you and little sister a big hug
apologizes for being mad and scary
hug her back as hard as you can
you think sometimes mommy needs you to help her sickies go away too
all in all today turned out mostly really good
especially since mommy made chicken vegetable noodles for dinner!
