It was a kneejerk and panicked response by Google to Microsoft's ChatGPT. Google was caught with their pants down here.
Funny thing is. The guys behind ChatGPT were initially employed by Google some years back to develop AI engine for them. But Google kept hitting the breaks and doing next to nothing with the endeavor that it frustrated the team.
