And? What’s your point? These aren’t the same people and developers sticking a token black/woman in each of their WW2 games.
 
These are separate groups that each want to acknowledge the contributions of these people during a time when they weren’t even thought of as people. Black people were still thought of as primitive beasts and yet they still wanted to fight and die for their country, even as they and their families were mistreated, harassed, and denied basic human decency back home. My mother had to grow up during that time period and it took until she was a young adult for segregation to finally end.
 
So this “there’s too many blacks/women in all of my ww2 war games” crap doesn’t fly with me. That’s just attempting to ignore the people who lost life, limbs, and blood in a country an ocean apart just because they weren’t “the majority” of white men who also lost their lives, limbs, and blood.

Sonic deserves all the praise it got because it was willing to do the one thing other movies wouldn’t; listen to their target audience.

The point is their popularity and focus in games is the same sort of “identity politics” so many in this thread seem to be so terrified of, and they don’t even notice it happening in WW2 games or excuse it as being “historical”.
 
And yes, its “overportrayal” has a positive effect in keeping those people in the collective memory and awareness, and accepted as belonging to the context. Something that people now want to deny to others in current/fantasy/sci-fi settings because “identity politics are bad!”.

Sonic probably would have done much worse if they stuck with the god awful original design and released in November. Nobody in their right mind would willingly sit through a two-hour trip through uncanny valley.

It almost certainly would have done worse, yes. Doesn’t change the fact that the team that worked on the “redesign” (which is an awfully simple term for the task they performed) were made to crunch until they completed work, and their bonus on completion was getting fired.

The International animation company that work on Sonic only closed it’s Vancouver branch, an expensive city to live in.
 
The movie was set for thanksgiving holiday, but was pushed to February of this year to give the team extra time

And that’s just the art, not mentioning the story, which in one I will let figure out the “hero” after the justice wasn’t enough attacks people out of petty revenge.

Really wish more movies did this. The Irishman? Should have listened to the audiences. Citizen Kane? Should have listened to the audiences
 
And of course there’s a difference between Cinema and, to borrow from Scorsese here, theme park films  
Doesn’t mean theme park films are bad by any means, but here’s the thing  
They aren’t apocalypse now, they aren’t The Pianist and they aren’t Parasite
 
And it’s a sad state of affairs when films like The Irishman are unable to get funding for a decade while a film about a talking blue hedgehog who eats Chili dogs is able to overwork animators because some people on the internet don’t like it

You missed the part where the studio shut down because of OUTSIDE CIRCUMSTANCES. The Sonic movie had NOTHING to do with it.

There is no difference between “Cinema” and “Theme Park films”, since they both count as being “Cinema”.
 
Any movie ever made, counts as “Cinema”.
 
And it wasn’t just because “Some people on the internet didn’t like it”, it’s because the original design had near UNIVERSAL backlash  
It wasn’t just a few randos on the internet, almost everyone(even those with a casual interest/no interest in sonic) thought the original design was dogshit.

By arguing semantics you’re ignoring his point, which is that many films are made with the intent to make as much money as possible, instead of artistic merit, and it’s useful to have words to communicate the difference between such films. If you think a film isn’t a ‘theme park film’, then argue so. Don’t argue that ‘theme park films’ don’t exist.

That’s not really the fault of the audience. It’s the fault of executive decisions to go with such an idiotic design, then the decision to overwork the animators in order to push the turd out faster.

We know they went through a crunch. We’re sorry that happened. But instead of blaming the audience, why not go blame the industry for allowing the initial product to exist as it did? The monstrosity you seem content to allow exist.
