Stronger than Katrina at landfall because it only made landfall as a Category 3.
This is now the strongest hurricane in the history of Louisiana.

Joint Typhoon Warning Center are clearly underestimating the true strength of this storm.
Based on my own analysis, the cloud top is so cold that it is enough to be rated on the Dvorak technique as a T# 7.5 means it contains enough wind speed of over 155 knots and a barometric pressure of over 900 millibars while JTWC still measures this storm as 145 knots and 910 mbar.
We here lack hurricane hunters and as per the Atlantic which they can much analyze hurricanes there accurately like Ida.

So it has strengthen up even more and now it has a wind speed of 155 kts (180 MPH).
That’s crazy. Category 6 when?

Kinda looked like the eye of Hurricane Andrew or Dorian if you ask me. Glad this never hit my place or anything closer to it.

I see a US threat of the currently Tropical Storm Sam as a major hurricane next week.

Typhoon Mindulle and Hurricane Sam are trying to outclass each other.
Let’s see which the two of them will be stronger at peak strength. :)

At the moment, Sam (left) has faster winds and lower pressure, but Mindulle (right) has colder cloud tops.
They’re both have 150 MPH peak winds forecast. I wonder if they would go Category 5 at the same time? That would be a crazy sight.

Holy Fuck! Mindulle is now a Category 5.
Sam got a little stronger too but he’s nothing compared to that guy’s intensity now.

Wait there is a thread to discuss tropical cyclones here? Wow wish I had known that before lol

Most of y’all here live in America or EU so no worries, Sam will not hit any part of the US except the Bermuda as of the latest forecast.

Ye I know, been avidly tracking stuff since 2004-ish, just didn’t know there was an overlap of interests on a pony forum haha

Typhoon Mindulle has been downgraded from Category 5 to 3 within the span of 6 hours.
Meanwhile Hurricane Sam got stronger from 145 to 150 MPH.

Sam was PHENOMENAL over the afternoon but has undergone an absolutely epic collapse, you don’t see extremely high end hurricanes degrade this fast over warm open water all that often. Guessing a badly timed eyewall replacement cycle, churning up some cooler water below (which I think caused the problem with Mindulle) a bit of unexpected wind shear, and some dry air getting pulled into the center happened because it looks pitiful now compared to its gorgeous peak earlier

Mindulle is now dead, Sam is still a Category 4.
And the best part about the both of them is they never made any landfall.

Typhoon Rai is currently explosively intensifying from a mere Category 1 to 4 in just 6 hours prior to landfall in Northern Mindanao.
My mom’s family lives in Cebu City and this storm is probably gonna directly hit the city tomorrow.

My mom’s family has now been evacuated from their homes.
What’s worse is they just moved in to their newly built house just this year and it’s sad to see it probably get destroyed so early.

Typhoon Rai will make landfall in the northernmost part of Mindanao (very close to Surigao City) as a Cat 5 later this afternoon.
Really crazy it got so strong this much quickly…

Typhoon Rai now ranks as one of the most intense December typhoon ever recorded.
The Typhoon now has a pressure of 915 hPa by JMA at 03Z today. It is now the third most intense typhoon for the month of December in recorded history (records began in 1951), tying with Russ (1990), Faxai (2001), and Nock-ten (2016).
Also, in JTWC scale, it is very rare for a tropical cyclone at Category 5 strength in low latitude (≤10°N). Typhoon Rai reached the scale at 9.7°N. Recent storms are Hagupit (2014), Haiyan (2013), Bopha (2012), Gay (1992) & Owen (1990).
Since 1945, only 12 had reached Category 5 at ≤10°N.
