I was only using an extreme example towards your discouraging view, I think the 7.62x51 should do just fine.
More gun powder and a flatter trajectory means less wasted shots.

The main advantage of the system that I can see is that it doesn’t look like it requires as much mechanical effort in order to cycle the action (though complexity is the price for that), as the gas operation only drives the extractor/reloader directly, and not the bolt itself.
