Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 5: Bambi
Personally, I enjoyed this film. The naturalistic approach made the film feel more immersive, the songs were nice to listen to (especially Little April Shower with its impressive animation), and Bambi, Thumper and Flower were absolutely adorable in the first half.
The second half gets more serious with an adult Bambi tussling with a sinister-looking stag and a forest fire by Man.
The one thing I will criticize is that the plot is a little dull compared to the previous works by Disney. They could’ve done a little more with Bambi, especially with other characters from the book the film is based on like Gobo and Ronno.
Overall, it’s a nice film to watch on its own, but if you’re looking for something more plot-centric, you’ll have to look somewhere else.
And that is the end of Disney Animation’s Golden Age. Tomorrow will be the start of the Package Age/Wartime Era.
P.S. Heed the words of Thumper: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

@I am a bird.
Other than Fantasia, Bambi seems to be so far Disney most artistic film.
Iirc it does stuff like use visuals to tell story even without dialogue and doesnt even have an actual villian. Maybe its like a silent film in some ways.
If nothing else it feels pretty experimental compared to what came before it.

There is plenty of dialog, the main contribution it made was moving towards more realistic animal designs compared to other animation and pioneering use of new techniques like the separation of the images into layers to create depth,

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 6: Saludos Amigos
This is a live-action/animated anthology film made of four different segments set in various locations in Latin America, made as part of the Good Neighbor policy. It is also Disney Animation’s shortest film at forty-two minutes, just long enough to count as a feature film (films have to be over forty minutes long to be considered feature-length).
I personally enjoyed this film a lot. Not only is there four different shorts to watch, but you also learn about some of the culture of the locations that the shorts take place in like Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world (also the name of the first short), Santiago, Chile (Pedro), the Argentinian pampas (El Gaucho Goofy) and Rio de Janeiro (Aquarela do Brasil (Portuguese for “Watercolor of Brazil”)).
I also liked José Carioca, the malandro Brazilian parrot. Despite only appearing in the final short, he had really good chemistry with “Pato Donald” with his jovial personality, him welcoming Donald to Brazil and showing him around, and Donald, in spite of his usual short temper, also gets along pretty well with José. José himself is also heavily popular in Brazil, rivaling with the likes of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in popularity among Brazilian fans.
I’d recommend this film for anyone who likes Latin America’s different cultures, even if the film might just be a product of its time (it was 1942, after all).

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 7: The Three Caballeros
Part educational film about Latin America, part LSD trip, this is another anthology film and a follow-up to Saludos Amigos that explores Latin American culture again, this time covering Mexico, a country that was left out of the previous film.
I had a lot of fun with this film. From the colorful animation, the really catchy songs that I danced to, and the history about Mexican culture such as Las Posadas, the story about a group of children re-enacting the trek of Mary and Joseph for Christmas and the origin of the Eagle on the Mexican flag, there was quite a lot that I really liked.
There was also the introduction of Panchito Pistoles, the Mexican rooster (not a woodpecker), who I also liked for having as much chemistry with Donald and José as they with each other and for being very respectful of his culture, educating Donald about various aspects about Mexican history. This might be my favorite film of the Package Age, and I’m only at the second film of this era!
All in all, I would highly recommend this film (and Saludos Amigos) for anyone who loves Latin American culture (especially Brazil and Mexico) and the three caballeros themselves just being good pals.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 8: Make Mine Music
As of now, this is the only Disney Animation film not on Disney+, so I had to watch it on Internet Archive.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t enjoy this as much as the previous films. There were a few highlights like Casey at the Bat, Peter and the Wolf and The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met and I did like the different styles and tones for each short.
However, the music, which was comprised of 1940s pop music, wasn’t very memorable and some of the shorts like Blue Bayou and Without You were also just forgettable. I couldn’t remember anything from those two after watching the film.
Overall, while there were parts of the film I liked, I see this film as just an inferior Fantasia.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 9: Fun and Fancy Free
Two shorts for the price of one, this film features Bongo, an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ short story “Little Bear Bongo” which tells of a circus bear who escapes into the forest, and Mickey and the Beanstalk, an adaptation of “Jack and the Beanstalk” staring Mickey, Donald and Goofy that are tied together with a framing story by Jiminy Cricket.
The two shorts are pretty entertaining to watch and (again) the animation for both of them is very good. I also liked the music accompanying them with the bears slapping each other and the harp singing the giant to sleep.
However, they (especially Bongo) were definitely products of their time. The bears slapping each other to the tune of “(Bears Like to) Say it With a Slap” would not fly by today’s standards, and Bergen having a small and private birthday party for Luanna Patten was fair for its day (it was 1947), but it would be seen as strange today. Also the in-between segments with live-action and Jiminy Cricket would be seen as complete fluff for a lot of people.
Personally, I liked Fun and Fancy Free, if only for Bongo and Mickey. Thankfully, they take up most of the film, leaving the Jiminy Cricket parts with only a few minutes, so you won’t be too bored to keep watching.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 10: Melody Time
This film is just like Make Mine Music (which, in turn, is just like Fantasia) in which you get seven short stories accompanied by music. These are Once Upon a Wintertime, Bumble Boogie, The Legend of Johnny Appleseed, Little Toot, Trees, Blame It on the Samba and Pecos Bill.
Personally, this one’s almost as forgettable as Make Mine Music if not for Donald and José coming back for Blame It on the Samba and the racist depictions of Native Americans in Pecos Bill (who are also called “redskins” which is a big no-no today).
As for Johnny Appleseed (a.k.a. John Chapman), the short does take a lot of liberties about the life of Johnny and his journey to plant apple orchids across several states, but it did keep his basic story intact, that being “he planted apple seeds and made apple orchids across the land”, so it’s fine.
Overall, it’s an okay film, except for the racist caricatures of Native Americans in Pecos Bill.
P.S. Little Toot is actually based off of the 1939 picture book of the same name. It also got sequels.

@I am a bird.
I watched one episode from season 1 and it surprised how it was played pretty straight and didn’t have too much biting satire.
I guess its the leftover of 80s wholesomeness and it hasnt went to the edge of the 90s quite yet.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 11: The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
Just like Fun and Fancy Free, this film has two shorts wrapped up into one feature-length package. The first segment is based on Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows and the second on Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
I’d say this is one of the better films of the Package Era and is more memorable than Make Mine Music and Melody Time. Both shorts are quite good on their own (though Sleepy Hollow is a bit more memorable in my opinion).
Overall, I’d say it’s a good film of this era, and while it’s still not as good as Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, you oughta still give it a watch.
And that’s the end of the Package Age/Wartime Era. Tomorrow will begin the Silver Age.

No one owns like Gaston! Changes tone like Gaston! No one weirdly resembles Brom Bones like Gaston!
Though Gaston is far more of a jerk than ol’ Brommy boy.

Thing is Brom is a outright good guy, the primary victim of his more extreme actions Ichabod is a massive POS, and if you watch you can see in this version he came up with the idea of scaring him on the spot so wouldn’t have time fuck to get the impersonation ready so it really wasn’t him chasing Ichabod,

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 12: Cinderella
I gotta say, for being Walt Disney’s big comeback after the Package Age, it wasn’t as grand as I had personally hoped for. The animation was very smooth like in the Golden Age, some of the musical numbers were nice to listen to and I’m glad we’re finally back to having one full-length feature film instead of multiple shorts put together.
There were some things I didn’t like, however. The mice characters, though alright at first, got pretty annoying later on with their high squeaky voices (especially when they started to sing), and, while I won’t fault the film for basing itself on the original fairy tale by Charles Perrault (not the Grimms Brothers’ version. That came much later.), I will say that I was disappointed that Lady Tremaine never got her much-deserved comeuppance for treating Cinderella so awfully.
All in all, apart from a few problems with some segments, I’d still give it a watch. It’s not as glamorous as I had hoped, but it’s still a good return to form for the studio.
P.S. Anastasia’s voice actress would later go on to voice Smurfette in The Smurfs and Ms. Bitters in Invader Zim. Just thought that was a neat little tidbit.
I am a bird.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Film Watch – Day 13: Alice in Wonderland
I had a lot of fun with this film for its surreal imagery, fun musical numbers, and silly characters (notably the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts). So, you can probably imagine my surprise when I found out that a lot of critics hated this film back when it released in theaters in 1951.
Fans of the original novel heavily criticized the film for “Americanizing a great work of British literature,” casual viewers were put off by the characters themselves and the story not having a proper story with a traditional narrative, and even Walt Disney himself viewed this film as a disappointment that “lacked heart.” It’s considered a minor classic nowadays.
In my opinion, I’d say Cinderella is the better of the two, but I had more fun watching Alice in Wonderland than the former, so I’d give this film a watch or two.
