I’m glad to share the enthusiasm! I’m eagerly awaiting for season 2, it’s so exciting! Now I’ll have to find a good profile picture from it, I’m watching it a second time already, so I’m bound to find something funny enough for my liking.

Do you realize there’s an entire generation of kids who have never seen The Flintstones, and only know about them from vitamins and Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles?

Lately, I’ve been watching the 2012 TMNT Series and so far I’m on Season 2. The art and CGI isn’t too bad and I like how at the end of an episode the scene becomes a 2D Comic book still. My only gripes with it are that I don’t care for Donnie obsessing over April, Splinter comes off as too much of a hardass at times; doing a couple things I don’t like (I don’t hate him though), Mikey’s idiocy can be too much, Raphael constantly abusing Mikey, and this version of April being not as fun as the one in Rise. The Kraang being the main enemy is kind of meh, but they’re serviceable I guess. Aside from all that, I still like the series.
I saw Slash and Destroy today, and man seeing Donnie and Mikey getting brutalized shocked me a bit. Not even Shredder beat the crap out of them that badly.

They have Flintstones on Tubi. Tried to get my neice, and nephews to watch it, but they just played on tablets instead. Kids these days… lol
@Salamenace
The series addresses those problems as it goes on. It gets better, Raph gets nicer to Mikey, Splinter becomes more fatherly, Mikey gets occasionally serious moments, and as it continues the Krangg take a backseat to Shredder, and other new and old/classic villains.
Honestly, I prefer the 2012 TMNT series over “Rise.”
I felt “Rise” was too focused on humor, deviated too much from the usual TMNT formulas, had too many new characters, (not enough old ones) and lacked comic book style plots. I also didn’t like it’a depiction of Splinter as a couch potato, making Raph the leader, or giving the turtles new weapons.
I didn’t mind April’s “race swap” though, (I think some overreacted over that) and I liked her glasses.
And yeah, 2012 TMNT gets pretty surprisingly dark at times, but the comedy balances it out.

Considering Rise got cancelled after, what, 1 and a half seasons? while tmnt 2012 got at least 5 seasons and a movie, I’d say most people agree with you.
Rise looked terrible and would have been shit even without the race and gender swaps. Which were shit.

2012 TMNT also had an IDW comic. (So did “Rise” though.)
Including surprisingly a nice crossover with the original Timmverse “Batman the Animated series.”
(That makes 4 TMNT X Batman comic crossovers so far. If they weren’t so awesome, I’d say they were getting “overdone.”)
I don’t think there were that many gender/race swaps, were there? I haven’t seen most of the “Rise” series, so correct me if I’m wrong.
I admit, I didn’t like making Casey Jones into “Cassandra Jones,“ because the TMNT franchise already has plenty of strong female characters they could use instead of making a male character a female.
(In fact, she looks more like Karai. Just make her Karai.)
I also didn’t like de-aging Baxter Stockman into “Baxter Stockboy.”
(Did they really need to rename him that to emphesize it more?)

Some things to address:
  • In regards to 2018 Splinter, he looks like a couch potato at first. But as the series goes on, you see there’s more depth to him than meets the eye. Splinter has never been my favorite character before, but after seeing how he got this got this way and the crap he went through, I end up feeling a lot more sympathetic to him. They definitely could’ve made him a little less off-putting, but what’s done is done. He’s a flawed character, but he tries to be a great father to his Sons and he cares for them greatly.
  • Raphael being the leader. Yeah, it’s weird. But that’s the whole point. He’s not meant to be the true defacto leader (He gave himself the role since he’s the eldest and Leo isn’t interested). The Turtles here start off as inexperienced/noobs at ninjutsu and not knowing how to use their own mystic weapons properly, but over time they get better at combat and become the experienced Turtles we know. Hence, the name Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Raph isn’t a perfect leader in this and he does make some bad decisions, but when he falls short, that’s when Leo steps in with his own leadership qualities so he can help the team. In fact, at the end of Season 2, Splinter says Leo’s the leader now. When the movie comes out, we’re gonna get to see Leo have to step up to the plate in order to take on the Kraang, and I’m sure it’s going to be awesome.
  • As for the new weapons, I don’t mind them. We’ve seen the characters use the same Ninjaken/Katana, Bo staff, Sai, and Nunchucks for years now. So having them change up their arsenal a bit isn’t a bad idea (Raphael actually used tonfa in the comics). One thing I like about the 2012 series is giving Mikey a Kusarigama and Donnie a Naginata Spear. So, I hope the following series continue that trend. I like how Donnie’s Tech Bo Staff in Rise is a lot more versatile, and it seems logical he would upgrade it from a wooden oak weapon. I also like how he has several “battle shells” for every occasion ala Iron Man, since he’s a soft-shell Turtle and his backside would be extremely vulnerable in a fight. In the end, the whole weapon deal is a non-issue since the Turtles get their signature weapons back for the Season 2 Finale.
  • Karai does actually exist in the series. I feel the Cassandra Jones twist wouldn’t be as bad if Nick didn’t screw over the Season 2 episode count so we could get more character development.
  • There aren’t any more Gender/race swaps. I wouldn’t ask Terminal about it since since I’m sure he hasn’t seen the series in full, and I’ve actually watched every episode from beginning to end. Again, if you ever have the legal/illegal means, I would give the show a second chance and try to watch with a more open mind. It just feels dumb to rag on Rise for being different when every past TMNT cartoon has always been different and they always brought something new to the table.
@Terminal Rex
2012 never got a movie though. It might’ve been a string of episodes combined into a faux movie. The lost tales and that mutant apocalypse thing, sure. But Rise is getting an actual animated film though for Netflix. As for the series, the art and animation can actually be spectacular and dynamic, especially with the fight choreography. The 2018 is slowly becoming a cult classic. I’ve seen even some Turtle fans who even despised the show give it an actual chance, and realize the series wasn’t as bad as they thought.

Truthfully, I didn’t mind April, Casey, and Karai becoming teens, as it puts them closer to the TMNT’s age.
@Salamenace
I’ve enjoyed every TMNT cartoon up until this one, but I wouldn’t mind giving it another chance sometime
And don’t get me wrong, I understand they have to change some things, and 2012 TMNT changed many things too.
One positive thing I’ll say is, I kinda liked the idea of Shredder being an ancient evil being kinda like the Tangu Shredder from the 2003 series. Which had several Shredders looking back.
2003 had Saki/Ch’rell Shredder, Karai becoming the new Shredder after his defeat, then the Tengu Shredder, and Cyber Shredder.
Oh, and the one episode appearance of the 3 mutant clone Shredders from the original comic. (Whom also came back in the 2012 series, but redesigned a bit more crustacean-like.)
That’s alot of Shredders!

They also made her very Mary Sue in that latest one, to the point she stuck out more like the main character in stead of the stand-in for the viewers to see the crazy things the Turtles get up to.
Also it had this thing:
and people wonder why it did poorly.
“If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” is usually a good idiom to fallow, too bad a lot of showrunners do the opposite.
