I’m guessing it was a bait and switch gag, like the “Night Juicer” Pikmin short. (Directed by Pikmin creator Miyamoto himself. Guess he has a dark sense of humor too.)

As someone who has a very low opinion of Hanna-Barbera’s work and contributions before the 90s, I do think its still neat that almost all of HB’s characters that aren’t Scooby-Doo or the Flintstones are finally getting another chance at being relevant for once and don’t have to rely on being part of an adult cartoon. (Not putting those shows down of course.) I did hear that a number of characters have undergone sex changes for this cartoon though and I’m wondering how many people will take offense to that.

It’s always pathetic when people who can’t create anything original need to crib off of established characters for their token representation.

There are a few people who disagree with the changes or find it weird, but it’s not that big a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Treat Jellystone! as an AU separate from the main Hanna-Barbera continuity.

Jellystone! is meant to be a love-letter to those old HB characters and properties, making new characters would go against that purpose.  
It’s less about tokenization, and moreso that the series would be a huge sausage fest with 99% of the town population being guys.

What kind of love-letter changes the characters so drastically based on some random head’s whims? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with creating new characters if they can manage to bolster the old ones and breathe new life into the property. And that “sausage fest” complaint feels just arbitrary, especially when barely anyone points out the same for the Looney Tunes.

The swaps don’t really change the characters much, their core elements are still there. Jabberjaw is still a shark who wants respect and affection but doesn’t get any, Squidly Diddly is still a musical octopus who now works at a music store, and Augie still wants to make her dad proud.
 
The Looney Tunes managed to avoid having huge changes with their characters due to their popularity/relevancy. A lot of these lesser Hanna-Barbera characters don’t have that luxury, and some of them haven’t been in the public eye for decades. Let me ask you this, before Jellystone! did you ever recently think about the cartoons of Jabberjaw, Loopy de Loop, & Yakky Doodle? Because I struggled to remember more than one Jabberjaw episode.
 
If you’re not a big fan of the changes, that’s okay. But let’s not act like this isn’t a huge affront to franchise (Yo Yogi! takes the cake for that). Greenblatt and staff are breathing life and interest to these obscure characters, and I think they’re doing a good job.

70s and 80s,not so much 90’s.  
Though I was more of an action/scifi kid. There could have been some Scooby Doo types out there and I probably wouldn’t have known.

Whenever I look at Yakky I can’t but remember Quacker from Tom and Jerry & Hard Luck Duck from What a Cartoon!. Funny enough, the latter was directed by William Hanna and made by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. So yeah…

My favorite Hanna Barbera character was Peter Potamus.

My headcanon that kara was the bad girlfriend in her last relationship may have just been proven correct with the new tuca and bertie episode.

Look it’s not fair that she’s in the same series as Hooty okay?
