It’s gone beyond that. It seems like people cannot tell whether one is being sarcastic or not anymore. Sometimes even the most innocent things that aren’t supposed to be “racist/whatever” gets dragged into the fray because some rage induced dingus who doesn’t have anything better to do in their free time feel the need to fuck up the hobbies of everyone else, especially if it’s a work of fiction.
These “activists” have become like those very “politicians and religious leaders” you speak of. Some cases, literally. Who’s auditing them!?

Have you ever considered that part of the reason why people have become much more blunt about it out of spite these days? It’s because some overgrown children on social media seem to take offense to everything even if it is obviously a lighthearted joke. This kind of McCarthy-esque witchhunting only breeds more resentment, and it’ll get worse if it keeps up.
People do not like to feel like they have the Sword of Damocles hanging over them all the time fearing whatever they say may get them canceled. We humans are not perfect, so quit trying to make us perfect.

That you can’t, and will thus stoically shield genuine cretins in order to “defend” people that aren’t even under attack, is a sign of how effective masking genuine bigotry as “comedy” is.

I bet you also complain about people being accused of rape in colleges because of the insignificant number of false/revenge accusations “the media” loves to blow up for clicks and rage, to the delight or misogynists everywhere.

You can blame the media for sensationalizing things for views and shit. With BOTH sides of the spectrum guilty of such. They’re a business, and controversy sells.

It seems society has this nasty habit of jumping to conclusions. Burn first and ask no questions. Like it or not, that is needlessly damaging to one’s reputation before they are proven guilty by evidence and jury. Even if false accusations are infrequent, it’s still a thing and it has needlessly destroyed lives even after they were proven innocent.
