You mean, “Amiibo Tap,” and “Mini Mario & Friends Amiibo Challenge?” Those were actually pretty cool, and I wish they had more free games that use Amiibo. In a way you pay for those games already with Amiibo, so requiring Amiibo is forgivable for those.
Though controversially, “Metroid: Samus Returns” had some unlockable content (like a harder mode, or Fusion suit) locked by Amiibo, which kinda helped give Amiibo a bad rep’ in recent times. (Correct me if I’m wrong, if there are alternative ways to unlock those.)
Some accuse it of being Nintendo’s way of being “greedy,” and “forcing you to buy them.” But honestly, they haven’t done it as much, (compared to all the risky randomized lootboxing other companies do) and as you said no game really requires Amiibo to play, or force you to buy more, except those free ones.
“Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival” also took heat for requiring Amiibo to play, but gamers always forget to mention that game does come with two free Amiibo, and Amiibo cards. (Even when said game’s price dropped.) So it’s not like they force you to buy more, unless you have two more friends dying to play the game. (Unlikely due to the backlash, and low critical reception.)
Still, the game might’ve been better received if it was another free game, with a download code included with certain Amiibo, or if it was an actual board game.
That said, being the most hated AC game, honestly “Amiibo Festival” isn’t bad. It’s like Mario Party, but “less friendship ruining.”
It’s not necessarily a great video game, but a decent digital board game, with some AC twists (with nods to the AC series) especially if you have younger relatives to play it with like me whom enjoy board games.
