So I was having an interesting conversation with my mother the other day about TV and how people feel the need to cover up something they like by saying “I know it’s not a good show/movie/book, but I still like it.” Now, I’m not taking about things like low budget shark movies that are pretty much made to be bad. I’m talking about things like cartoons, television shows, whatever.
Basically, she said this. “Honey, people hate my tastes. My interests range from Game Of Thrones to Teen Wolf. You read books about building houses one minute and then watch that weird anime with the girl whose outfit barely covers her nipples the next.* But guess what? We’re enjoying what we’re looking at. We enjoy the context. So why bother saying it’s “crappy”, if we like it so much?”
What interest me is that seems like the mentality so many bronies have when it comes to talking about their precious show. To say that it’s a guilty pleasure. And I say fuck that, we shouldn’t have guilty pleasures. Like what you like with pride unless, you know, you’re in some sort of life-or-death situation because of them. So come on out, and tell us all what you’re really unashamed to like, something that should be embarrassing but really isn’t to you.
I’ve had a thing for Pinkie Cooper lately. Yeah, yeah, it’s a kids cartoon trying to sell the toy there’s really no conflict that isn’t overcome within two minutes, but to be honest, there’s something really charming about it to me.
