What Are You Listening To

Franz Ferdinand - Everydaydreamer, Hooked, Night Or Day, Black Eyelashes and Bar Lonely
From the sixth and newest/most recent album by the Scottish (From Glasgow) Indie rock band, “The Human Fear” (2025)
According to bandleader Alex Kapranos, the album touches upon certain types of human fears (hence the album title), including “fear of social isolation, fear of leaving an institution, and fear of leaving or staying in a relationship”
My first brand new album of the year! Noice.
Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass, Helicopter, Positive Tension, Blue Light, She’s Hearing Voices and Price Of Gasoline
From the acclaimed debut album by the English (From London) Indie rock/Dance punk band, “Silent Alarm” (2005)
I love this album! From the lethargic, dreamy guitar textures of Russel Lissack and the frantic bass thunder of Gordon Moakes to the spitfire True-Brit poetry of Keke Okereke and the octopus-limbed, mindfucking drumming assault of Matt Tong, this album was a thrill and a half for me to listen to… one that is guaranteed to melt some faces off!

The Kinks - Wall Of Fire, Don’t, Over The Edge, Hatred (A Duet)*, Surviving** and Close To The Wire
From the 24th and final album by the English (From London, formed in 1963) Rock group, “Phobia” (1993)
The Kinks went on to release one more live album in 1996, breaking up the following year. The brothers/band founders Ray and Dave famously had a complicated and often fractious relationship. They tried many times to settle their differences, including during a 2018-2023 period in which their relationship had mostly repaired and, after playing together as guests for each others’ respective solo performances, they attempted to revive the band for a brand new album. This unfortunately hasn’t come to pass, as Ray and Dave couldn’t agree on a direction for the album lineup and tour (Ray wanted a legacy tour featuring a revolving door of different living ex-Kinks including original drummer Mick Avory, while Dave wanted a simpler and more current lineup focusing mostly on he and Ray. Dave also always had a dislike for Mick). At the moment, a full reunion really seems unlikely. It’s a shame, as the Kinks were truly unique.
*A vocal duet between Ray and Dave
**The title for me pretty much reflects my hopeful plan for the rest of this and the following next three years, what with the current sociopolitical climate and all…
Grave Altar - Intro*, Black Wings Of Wrath, Death, Angel Crypt and Rites Of Mayhem
From the second and most recent album by the English (Formed in Bristol, later based in the West Midlands) Black/Thrash metal band, “Shrines Of Hatred” (2025).
*This may just be an ambient start to the album with a generic title, but it’s perfectly dark and chilly that I had to include this in my picks!
Plus, though I had an okay time at work, I saw an article online (News, natch) shorly before clocking out that made me feel incensed enough that I almost wanted to smash something. Almost. This album is a better alternative, and I’m glad I didn’t go with the former. lol
