Black Sabbath - The Illusion Of Power (Feat. Ice-T), Get a Grip, Can’t Get Close Enough, Shaking Off The Chains, Guilty As Hell and Kiss Of Death
From the 18th studio album by the legendary English (From Birmingham) Heavy/Doom metal band, “Forbidden” (1995).
This album was an usual beast… It was produced by Ernie C, the guitarist of the Crossover Thrash/Rap metal band Body Count, and as mentioned above, features BC’s leader (and legendary rapper in his own right) Ice T. This album, in addition to featuring a lineup of founding guitarist Tony Iommi, Whitesnake bassist Neil Murray, Rainbow drummer Cozy Powell and Geoff Nicholls of the NWOBHM group Quartz, was the last to feature lead singer Tony Martin (A Brummie like Iommi and Nicholls). Upon its release, it was met with mixed-to-negative reception from both fans and critics alike, and was criticised for Ernie C’s rough and muddy production techniques (Reportedly, during production, Ernie tried to convince Cozy to play Hip-Hop-style beats, and the late drumming pro/known badass refused to do so. However, this copy of the album which I picked up on CD is a 2024 remaster by Tony Iommi, and I believe it definitely improves on the original release’s shortcomings, uncovering the potential in that was in the songs all along, proving it in my eyes to have been historically underrated and overhated.
After the album’s original release, the original lineup of Sabbath would reunite (with Ozzy in tow) in 1998 for the live album “Reunion”, performed and recorded at Birmingham’s NEC. Sadly, Cozy Powell passed away that same year following a car crash, and Geoff Nicholls passed away in 2017 from lung cancer. The two Tonys, Neil and the two men from Body Count are still with us.

Yesterday, I listened back to the Grateful Dead’s 1967 self-titled debut album while working.
It’s clearly very early for them and in many ways feels like a beta version of what they’d become down the line, with a distinct lack of Robert Hunter’s poetic lyrics and Mickey Hart’s dual drumming, and a lack of originals in general (7/9 of the album’s songs are covers), but I surprisingly found myself jamming to it a lot more than I expected. It’s got a real scrappy garage band sound and great production for the time, Jerry’s guitar playing is a little sloppier but still very melodic at points, plus Pigpen’s a great organist. Standout tracks are “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion),” “Cold Rain and Snow,” and “Beat It on Down the Line.”

Decided to continue my listening quest of the Grateful Dead’s early material with their second “studio” album, Anthem of the Sun.
Actually a studio-live hybrid, this one is vastly different from The Grateful Dead in sound and music style, with way less of a blues style and way more of the psychedelic rock sound they’d become famous for, plus a heavy focus on in-studio experimentation. Musically, I think it is quite amazing and showcases the jamming way better than the first one, including the drum interplay between Bill Kreutzmann and then-new second drummer Mickey Hart. I do have some slight issues with the production, as the cuts between the live and studio recordings are often not seamless and the overall sound is muddier than their debut; however, I can forgive those issues, as the production of this album was groundbreaking for the time. Standout tracks are “New Potato Caboose,” “Born Cross-Eyed,” and the seven-minute epic “That’s It for the Other One.”

DragonForce - Power Of The Triforce, Burning Heart, The Killer Queen, Doomsday Party and Pixel Prison
From the ninth and most recent album by the British (Based in London) Power metal band, “Warp Speed Warriors” (2024)
This album draws on video game and tabletop game-concepts, such as in the aforementioned Power Of The Triforce (Inspired by Legend Of Zelda, of course) and Space Marine Corp (Inspired by Warhammer). I didn’t mention the latter tune, because I found it a bit too corny TBH, even for Power metal). I mentioned the former song because I’m just a sucker for the Zelda series! Overall, I wouldn’t call this one of DragonForce’s greatest albums (it’s got its shortcomings) but it’s all in good fun, and heavy and shreddy as always. Bonus fun fact: This album is the first to include American-born musician Alicia Vigil on bass, the band’s first female member thus far.
