I hear he wasn’t, and he just kissed up to the Catholic Church to get political support. Though, many historians argue whether he was or not.
He was also quoted calling religion a “weakness” according to some, and was into a lot of weird occult/cultist stuff, and wasn’t a devout believer in any specific religion, as he believed many things mixed together.
And history’s greatest monsters weren’t always religious either, Stalin was a huge atheist, killed many too, and severely punished, and killed religious people, as well.
Though, I do agree with you on the subject of righteousness/morality does not always equal what you believe in.
I tire of both atheists and religious people trying to say anyone who isn’t like them are “bad people.”
In fact, even the Bible and other religious texts warn people about becoming too self-righteous, or thinking they’re above everyone.
“Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” Which is referring to the fact, nobody is infallible, or perfect.
