One big thing I miss from the era of Channel Awesome was illustrated YouTube thumbnails.
 
Back in the heyday of online critics, all of them used to do illustrated thumbnails–the NC, the Snob, Todd, Crash, Rap Critic–and they were great!  
 
 

 
Thumbnails nowadays are too lazy. Just a screenshot of the thing they’re reviewing, often next to an image of the person’s face. Boring.

I know that the Snob and Todd still consistently use illustrated thumbnails, and that the Rap Critic uses them occasionally, but I don’t know why others have stopped. Guess these types of thumbs guarantee more clicks?

It’s likely that they commission an artist to make their thumbnail art, and that sort of thing tends to cost money. Money they’re not willing to part with for whatever reason.

Maybe a quick photoshop job is faster and cheaper then having to commission an artist to draw a thumbnail every single week.

Didn’t Doug Walker draw his own thumbnails? Alot of them looked like his style.

I don’t know. But if that’s the case, then it’s likely that the time he spends drawing thumbnail art cuts into the time needed to work on other parts of his videos.

No Doug never drew his own thumbnails, it was someone on DA he used to commission who drew them.
