Unpopular opinion time (super alpha no pony edition)

I think it’s very weird how the narrative about the discourse surrounding the Twilight books/films has been rewritten. It used to be that people disliked them because they were poorly written garbage, but now it’s turned into “People only dislike them because they were aimed at/enjoyed by women.” Like, even with the benefit of hindsight, those films have not aged well in many parts. The characters are either flatter than cardboard or horribly manipulative, the dialogue was poorly written, and some plot points were just out of nowhere.

That said, though, the soundtracks to those movies freaking slap and I will not hear otherwise.

I think it’s due to the sigma of it being a chick-flick. There were plenty of movies made for a male audience that was as bad or worst, but it was a movie series aimed at women that got the worst of it.

I say mock all bad movies.

Any movie that has the former love interest of the girl fall in love with her infant daughter is a movie I am happy to avoid!

WTF? does that happen in Twilight? I never got into it, I assumed it was for people physically into vampire and werewolf dudes.

They were both generic-hot shirtless dudes, so not as specific as you’d think.

Yup. It’s revealed that Jacob, the Native American werewolf boy who was one of Bella’s love interests the whole time, imprinted on Bella’s uncanny valley CI vampire baby after she was born, and wanted to do her. It’s weird, and creepy in multiple regards.

Dude, my mom was OBSESSED with that trash-pile series for years. I spent the better part of a decade trying to forget about it.

At least the movies had kickass soundtracks. “Decode,” “A Thousand Years,” and “Neutron Star Collision” all come from those, and “Supermassive Black Hole” blew up from its use in the first one.

That being said, I remember hearing that even women love to read and make fun of it before the movies were made.

The idea that the status of being rich gives you incredible power and privilege is more powerful than the actual, physical riches.

Yeah, that’s my point.

People believe it and pass it on forever, and my general point is that it’s not an immutable fact.

Like, the thought that made think about it enough to post that, was all the times someone rich gets acquitted of some crime, and people say he got off because he has money. And when I ask how specifically them having money that other people definitely want(and could more easily get if he’s gone) helps them, I’m supposed to just take ‘money’ as an argument.

Not who he’s paid off, who he’s threatened, not even conflicts of interests, all things that would be perfectly more serviceable excuses, but no, it’s just the mythical power of ‘money’.

I don’t think it’s supposed to be literal. “Money” sounds like shorthand.

That pretty much sums up what I was going to say. It isn’t the money itself that gives someone power, but the resources that they’re able to acquire through its use, such as being able to hire extremely skilled lawyers, or fund the campaigns of politicians that will create laws favorable to their interests should they be voted into office.

Comic book movies making fun of characters for having comic book-y names are the screen equivalent of musicals questioning why people break out into song.

Less of that and more the fact that it’s a very basic observation and joke that has been made countless times within the medium, and is tired, played-out, and no longer remotely clever.
