According to a website I read, Comic Book sales peaked in 1968 during the height of Kirby’s Silver Age style.

The 70s sales were weak compared to the 60s, and it’s been downhill since then

Ah, so it’s just a derogatory term. Gotcha.

The problem is that you have to be knowledgeable about a good chunk of a hero’s story, which can span anywhere from 10 to 80 years worth. They also tend to split that up between many different spin-off series that you have to read in order to understand what’s going on. It alienates new fans who just want something enjoyable to read.

Give One Piece credit. It may have over 1000 chapters, but it’s always made clear what order you need to go in, AND it’s all available within one single source. There is spin-off material, but none of it’s required to understand the story.

The Ultimate universe from Marvel tried to fix this issue, advertising itself as a more newcomer friendly alternative with less history and baggage, but it ended up getting just as convoluted as the main universe in nearly 1/6th of the time, all the while being needlessly more dark and grim than it had any right to be.

Then Ultimatum happened and pretty much sunk the entire line into unsalvagable territory.
