Boycotting isn’t cancel culture, i don’t think. Because that’s a choice that consumers make.
 
Cancel culture is more like companies blacklisting people or properties from the perceived threat from dated or entirely false accusations of wrongdoing. A boycott could still take place in that circumstance, but tends to preempt it. It’s a choice leaders make, damn the audience they may still have left.
 
Gillette still has consumers, Vic still gets banned from cons. If you can see the difference there.

I brought it up because I grew up during that era and it was one of the first cases of cancel culture I was ever made aware of in my youth, long before it had the name “cancel culture.”

Maybe I was just born too late to understand its appeal, but I’ve never found grunge rock to be as good as a lot of rock fans and critics seem to believe it is. In fact, I believe the genre has had a much more negative impact on music than most people like to admit, because it led to post-grunge, nu metal, and years of people believing that rock can’t be fun.

It also killed hair metal, which hedonism aside, is a really great and fun genre to listen to.

Grunge didn’t lead to those genres alone  
Industrial Metal, Funk Metal, Alt Rock as a whole (U2 specially), Rap Rock and even Post Punk all led to those Genres dominating Rock.

Agreed, it killed basically all ‘80s metal in fact. Like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Living Coloür, Skid Row, and Queensrÿche all had their sales significantly bolstered by grunge. An entire generation’s classic rock was lost as a result of the grunge movement. The ‘80s was the golden age of heavy metal and yet so many places refuse to acknowledge that.
 
Grunge definitely produced some great stuff, but virtually none of the bands were consistent in quality. Nirvana especially was overrated.
 
But also, and here’s a point I’ve been getting at, grunge was not fun. It was many things, but it was not a fun genre to listen to. There’s been this mentality for years now that rock can’t be fun, that it has to be serious and edgy, and TBH I kind of blame that on grunge as well. And artists have been aping off the same grunge and post-grunge riffs for years now that it’s no wonder rock is dying when nobody is doing anything new with it.
 
(FR, I’ve legit heard people call Halestorm “sellout rock” and “pop” because their music is actually fun, which kind of makes me want to scream)

I heard Haelstorm on the mainstream radio once. That was weird. 2 or 3 songs,even!

Spyro 1 is better than Crash 1.

Yeah grunge was definitely not a fun genre, it thrived on moodiness, pain, angst and rebellion against authority/commercialism, which Rage Against The Machine did better with. It was also what shaped the 90’s attitude of angst and extremeness compared to the glam and flashy colors of the 80’s. Not all the classic rock bands were doomed in the 90’s, some of them were still relevant like Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Kiss, Van Halen and such.

Though in fairness, I’ve joked in the past that the real reason Kurt Cobain killed him self is because somebody showed him the future and he saw what a bunch of whiny cunts Nirvana fans would turn out to be.
