Speaking of, what’s a plot or subplot that everyone hates?

For me, it’s the 3 Act Liar Revealed plot.

Because it’s always the same structure, every, fucking time.

Act One: Liar establishes self in Team/Meets Love Interest/Becomes “chosen one”.

Act Two: Liar builds trust, adapts to group/falls in love/gets interested in whatever the hero is supposed to do. Last 3rd of Act Two, Liar gets revealed, group disowns him/love interest leaves/team decides to enact grand plan without fake chosen one despite them being a lynchpin.

Act Three. Lair sulks, but returns to “prove self”. Group/lover/team is skeptical at first and often rejects them even if they literally just rode in to save the day. Big bad/antagonistic force fucks up somehow, group/lover/team accept the Liar back despite being admenent about them rejecting them before. Defeat big bad/antagonistic forces, get friends/lover/hero status for real.

We should call that subplot The Liar’s Journey.

Causes the event that sets the Hero on his journey.
Builds trust in Hero’s team as the Bro who has everyone’s back.
Reveals himself as the culprit of the inciting incident.
Left team. SULKS. Returns to team much later.
Team accepts him back. Help team saves the world. Get hero status.

Personally, I’m fucking tired of the whole “will they, won’t they” bullshit that seems to be in every romance story out there.

More often than not, it’s done for the sake of dragging it out to an unreasonable level, just so they can milk the drama and audience engagement for all it’s worth.

I can tolerate it if the romance is more of a background thing (Avatar), or if it’s used primarily for the sake of comedy (Fairy Tail), but if you tell me that one of the main points of a show with romance in it is that “it’s a slow burn,” it’s usually the point when I lose interest in it.

It’s even worse if the media actually shows some actual progress with the relationship (i.e. they actually kiss), only for them to backtrack and undo it within a few episodes or so. Star Vs. The Forces of Evil was full of that dogshit, and it’s one of the main reasons why I despise the latter half of that show.

Have you watched Owl House? I think you’d like how refreshingly forward the romance sub-plot is in that.

I actually watched the entire show as it came out.

And yes, I am aware of the beauty that is Lumity. It’s cute, it only takes them half the show to get together (as opposed to them doing it at the very end), and it’s unapologetically queer on top of that. It’s literally perfect.

But it only further showcases why I loathe the “will they, won’t they” shit. Because I know that there is a better way to do romance in a show (or at least a way that isn’t infuriating to experience), but most of the time, they choose to drag it out.

I remember when this was considered a serious leak for the other universe Gods of Destruction when Dragon Ball started doing the multiverse.

Because Toriyama (RIP) was such a madman he probably would’ve done it.

How much truth is there to this trope:

I’ve seen games or movies where the unarmed protagonist will quickly yank a pistol out of a goon’s hand with little effort but will struggle against a thug with a knife.

Leverage.

You can grab a gun pretty much anywhere and yank it out of someone’s hand.

Can’t really grab the blade of a knife to do the same. At least not without losing some fingers.
