Do comic book writers suffer from health issues like manga writers do?

As far as I know, not really. American comic books are more of a collaborative effort, where the art is handled by a team of people (one person does the layouts, while someone else does the coloring and/or inking, etc) that constantly gets shuffled around on a per issue basis, wheras manga art is only ever handled by one person throughout the entire run. Additionally, they only have to worry about getting 20-ish pages out per month instead of doing 20 per week or 40 per month.

Why don’t they just change to the way comic book writers work? The manga writer could still draw the manga and have other artists copy their art style so they won’t have to draw anything themselves and give ideas on how the story and characters and stuff should go while other people help them carry the workload so they won’t suffer unnecessary health issues and die early.

Actually, that’s untrue. Mangaka DO have assistants to help with things such as backgrounds and help clean up the art before it’s submitted to the publisher. Even Oda (author of One Piece) has said the he has an average of 5 assistants that help him in the inking and penciling details or backgrounds and application of graytones in the OP manga.

As for why Mangaka don’t let their assistants do more of the heavy-lifting when it comes to art, I believe it’s a mixture of pride and Japan’s unhealthy work ethic.

My brain keeps coming up with screwy ideas.

Bear in mind that one of the requirements for being Oda’s assistant is you must be willing to die for One Piece however.

Being a managaka must be both a blessing and a curse. You get tremendous creative freedom on the one hand but you also have the most extreme time pressures.

I can imagine a boss saying “If you want a more relaxed job, then go be a janitor instead.”

I mean, it had a presence at the 30th Anniversary Sonic Symphony. I think the creative at Sega aren’t shying away from their past as much these days, and honestly it’s better to embrace the past, warts and all, than to cringe at it.

Well, to be honest, the workload of a mangaka’s assistants kinda depends on the mangaka themselves. Oda’s are a lot more hands-on like you said, doing all the backgrounds and finer details, while Oda himself focuses on the characters. But for the most part, we don’t really know the extent of how much Horikoshi, Tabata, or even Kubo’s assistants contribute towards the art.

I’m thinking of getting Persona 5 for PS4, it’s currently 8 bucks on the PlayStation Store. Could be my first entry into the Persona series.

I’d go with Royal instead. It’s basically an enhanced version of 5 with extra content, quality of life updates, a slightly better translation, and an entirely new final area.

Also, you can’t transfer data over between versions, so if you get the original release now and then decide to get Royal later down the line, you’ll have to do the entire game over again just to access the new content. It’s typical Atlus bullshit, but I still wanted to warn you about it regardless.

And if “Royal” is supposed to be better…then why don’t they get rid of the regular version and give the discount to Royal instead?

Dude, I’m not peer-pressuring you. I was just giving you a heads-up so that you weren’t blindsided by anything.

Atlus does that with every re-release, either out of laziness or for game preservation purposes. The original Shin Megami Tensei IV was still available for purchase on 3DS even after the updated Apocalypse version came out.

Regular P5 is $8 and P5 Royal is $60 on PlayStation Store, and I’ve got financial anxiety now.

I hate to break it to you, but P5 isn’t actually on sale right now. Most of them aren’t as a matter of fact.
