Machine Gun Kelly's transition to rock was a lot successful than I thought given his album went to number one on the Billboard Hot 200 and a couple of his songs charted on the Hot 100, including one in the Top 40.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check out a few of the songs and snippets of others and it's not for me. I personally thought it was a smart move switching from rap to pop punk since his hip hop image got tarnished and he does have the intensity and charisma to do rock. Despite that, it doesn't click with me at all , mostly because I don't like his monotone voice, it doesn't fit with the pop punk style of the instrumentation. It's definitely there and he does seem really passionate about this genre and I applaud him, but he could've done it a bit better than just distorted guitars and songs about troubled relationships. At least the millenial crowd is eating it all up and it does bring some sort of rock back on the Hot 100 after being dormant for so long so there's that.

Overall, a pretty underwhelming album based off of what I've heard. I'm not gonna be harsh and condemn him for the genre switch so I'm gonna say that I wish him good luck with this new direction and I hope he reaches a new and bigger audience, but don't expect me to be a fan anytime soon.

I'm not surprised that he's switching to rock. I was never buying him as a rapper, and Eminem kind of soured his image quite a bit, but moreover it seems unsurprising given his longtime love for the genre and his surprisingly good portrayal of Tommy Lee in The Dirt. Hope he brings rock back to the charts!

Not gonna lie, it's depressing how all the mainstream rock albums this year feel like they could have been released 15 years ago and would have fitted in

I've been pretty much sticking to alt rock, metal, and weird shit like Alestorm, Wind Rose, and Gloryhammer lately.

So I've got no idea what contemporary rock is doing right now.

I've been hearing Alestorm, Wind Rose and Gloryhammer for years. Just like Grave Digger, Kamelot, Knasterbart, Finsterfrost, Feuerschwanz, Einherjer, Oomph!, Nanowar of Steel, Van Canto, Unleash the Archers, Varg, Ye Banished Privateers and so on. So actually the entire Napalm Records label up and down. ;-)

I don't think that's "weird shit" (grin). But I don't take this in a negative way either, I'm just glad that we seem to have a similar taste in music. In that sense, skål! ;-D

He was amateur hour as a rapper so the fact that his best song was a diss against one of the most legendary rappers of all time sets the bar incredibly low for his music. Either way yeah, he does look a lot happier doing pop punk even if I don't like it too much.

I don't know if that'll be enough to bring back rock fully, but I do kind of expect some type of rock whether it'd be pop punk or some more trap rock to make a splash on the Hot 100 for the next couple of months.

Congratulations to 24KGoldn for his first ever number one song with "Mood" featuring iann dior. It's a decent song, not great but not terrible, pretty standard song for this year that I don't know people will remember down the line.
