Congratulations to Brenda Lee for her third number one song with Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree. Her previous two were both I’m Sorry and I Want To Be Wanted, both from 1960. She also broke the record for longest gap between number one songs at 63 years, youngest artist to reach number one because she recorded that song when she was 13 and oldest artist to reach number one at 78 when it made it to the top.
I’m happy for her, it’s a good Christmas song and it’s a better change of pace from Mariah Carey reaching the top spot again.

Oh man, R.I.P. I know the Denny Laine era of the Moody Blues is usually ignored (they were a very different beast during his time, and the band as we know them really started after he left and was replaced with Justin Hayward), but they still wouldn’t have existed without him, as would Wings, with him being the only permanent member in the group alongside the McCartneys.

On this day 43 years ago, John Lennon was assassinated outside his home in New York City by Mark David Chapman, an enraged Beatles fan. He was 40 years old.

My 10 Least Favorite Hits of 2023:
It’s that time of the year, where I present my 10 worst hits of 2023. If someone asks me what the year was like in music, I’ll answer with “It was an interesting year for music, but a miserable year for being a chart watcher”. Seriously, following the Hot 100 this year felt like a chore more than anything not because of the songs that got big, but because of a lot that happened within Billboard from streaming manipulation to older songs making a comeback from Tik Tok to feeling like there was less and less new music to Billboard lowering the cutoff to 49 weeks instead of the typical 52-53 weeks to coincide with their award show, which is still one of the stupidest decisions they’ve ever made. This in turn lead to in my opinion a very weak year for popular music where potential good songs missed out while the bad stuff was REALLY bad, but unlike last year which was also not a great year for music, this year had more variety to it. Like usual, this is for songs that made the Billboard Year End, and I am excluding songs that made last year’s Year End and Christmas songs for obvious reasons. With that, let’s get started on the 10 songs that I didn’t like this year.
10- Peaches & Eggplants by Young Nudy feat. 21 Savage (Hot 100 Peak: #33): Looks like rap’s presence in the mainstream is starting to go down. It still has the popularity enough to get album bombs, its albums debut on top of the album chart and even have songs make the top ten, but it’s clear that it isn’t the mainstream powerhouse as it was from the latter half of the decade to even the beginning of this decade as country and pop is starting to reclaim its place in the popular music; Songs like this are an example why. If you know your emoji lingo, the title reference is to the peach and eggplant emojis which is a reference to ass and dicks, but the title is the least of the song’s problems. It’s a twerk anthem but with lyrics that aren’t clever and don’t scan right if there are even lyrics since the majority of the song are adlibs. Young Nudy has the charisma of drywall and doesn’t have the energy to go all in with the subject matter when twerk songs are supposed to be fun and energetic. The guest rapper 21 Savage sounds even more checked out and like he’s doing it for a paycheck and to get another song on the chart, when he can pull off this monotonous style in better songs. The beat is just a bunch of modern pre-sets with bass boosts that are a headache to listen to and synth flourishes that sound weak. The one positive I can give this song is that the adlibs do give this song that “bounce” and compliment the twerk energy its going for, but not by a whole lot. If I was in a strip club and I heard this song, I’ll take my 15 dollars and go somewhere else.
9- Under The Influence by Chris Brown (Hot 100 Peak: #12): One reason why the hits of this year was frustrating is the amount of older songs that are returning and becoming hits instead of actual music getting released in 2023, and the blame for that is of course Tik Tok. Usually, this site takes unknown songs and gives them exposure, but for some reason it focused more on songs from the previous decade, and this one is the worst of this trend. This song is actually from 2019 and comes from the deluxe edition of Chris Brown’s album from that year which thankfully didn’t become a hit then, but sadly did this year. This isn’t the worst Chris Brown song I’ve heard, but my God is it one of his most monotonous and dullest songs ever. The writing isn’t anything special about how a hot chick is making him feel drunk in love with phrases you’ve heard plenty of times before and the girl beater himself singing like he had 10 shots of tequila and is about to pass out on the strip club floor. I think this is an attempt to copy the mumble singing of Jeremih from the mid 2010’s, which if that’s the case then just dates this song even further. This is from a singer who’s been active since 2005 and has had experience throughout the years, so I can only speculate that he stopped trying and slurred in the mic in the hopes that his fanbase can eat it all up knowing that he’s a successful singer despite his controversial past. The production I will admit is barely passable, I think it sounds okay and with some fine tuning, I can see it being used in a much better song. Just when we thought we escaped Chris Brown, he still finds a way to pop up on the charts…
8- Search & Rescue by Drake (Hot 100 Peak: #2): Are you ready for more Drake? Cause I’m not. It’s been 14 years since he first broke through, and here he still is making music and still being lifeless and bored as ever and still racking up hits. He stopped being good at around roughly 2017 in my opinion when he did release some pretty decent songs, but after that it’s all been downhill with him knowing that he’s Drake, he can release anything and it’ll become a hit. Hell, he could release a record of him coughing and sneezing on the microphone and he’ll still get an album bomb. What I’m saying is that he needs a break, and this song shows that he needs an ultimatum from going to the recording studio. Like usual, he raps like he’s on autopilot and he’s had his brain turned off over a boring beat that sounded like it was made in 2 minutes over lyrics of him being a soft lover man who wants and needs love and affection, you know like a hundred other Drake songs? Also, “I know I’m a pitbull but dale Mami” is one of the worst things to come out of this Canadian’s mouth. The second half of the song where it picks up in energy is fine and breathes a tiny bit of life into the song but it’s only for a fleeting moment. It’s a song that’s really not worth your time and to show that Aubrey here is the definition of quantity over quality.
7- Area Codes by Kaliii (Hot 100 Peak: #33): 2023 was the year of the female rapper, a lot of female rappers broke through in the mainstream as the previous female rap giants like Nicki Minaj, Cardi Band Megan Thee Stallion seemed to not release a whole lot of music, which opened the gap for new artists to fill in the void. The biggest one who broke through was Ice Spice who I talked about earlier in this list, but to me the worst one who got big was this one. Kaliii tries to stand out by doing this breathy style with fast raps that isn’t clever and a slow chorus which sounds like I’m getting violated in every way. The loud thumping beat doesn’t help when it doesn’t have a melody and just sounds offbeat with the other sounds like finger snaps and brief vocalizations not helping in breaking the monotony. The lyrics about having a squad and dating a lot of guys isn’t interesting in the slightest and doesn’t have the best writing. I predict that this song is gonna get forgotten in a few years, and I won’t blame anyone for doing so.
6- Made You Look by Meghan Trainor (Hot 100 Peak: #11): As a chart watcher, I have noticed that around the 2nd or 3rd year of a decade, you have artists from the previous decades scoring some final hits before they get swept aside for the newer artists, and the previous two years was no exception with a few 2010’s artists getting some surprising last hits, including the bass girl herself Meghan Trainor. Huge between 2014-2016, she snuck in a song late last year onto the chart and into the Top 20; It’s too bad the song is not good at all. It’s basically All About That Bass but instead of body positivity, it’s an ego trip on how fabulous and charming she is to others. Instead of sounding playful and cheeky about it, she instead sounds obnoxious and condescending about it due to the way how she sings it which makes her look unlikeable in the process. The fake, plastic faux-retro production doesn’t help and sounds recycled from her previous songs and instead sounds flat and uninspired. Here’s hoping this’ll be her last hit and we can leave her behind in the 2010’s where she belongs.
5- Barbie World by Ice Spice & Nicki Minaj w/ Aqua (Hot 100 Peak: #7): One of the most popular movies of this year was Barbie: The Movie, a comedy movie that makes fun of gender roles and exploring themes of existential crisis, all while using one of the most recognizable toys in the world. The director must’ve known that this movie was gonna blow up so she loaded the soundtrack with a lot of the hottest stars in music. This is one of the two main soundtrack songs and while the other is great, this one is just bad. For one thing, it’s a complete retread of the earlier hit Princess Diana by Ice Spice & Nicki Minaj, a better song but made worse. The lyrics about being flirtatious while using Barbie metaphors doesn’t work with the context of the movie and are just clunky as hell, especially with that Bob Dylan line which sounds awkward. Both female rappers sound checked out and don’t have any chemistry with one another and know that they’re recycling an old hit so they put in half the effort. The worst part of the song however is easily the beat with the sample of the 90’s europop hit Barbie Girl by Aqua, a song that I really hate with a burning passion so seeing it being used this way did not amuse me, and they just loop the chorus in the background which is very distracting to the point that I can’t pay attention to the actual lyrics. It would’ve been better if they just used the original song or have the band make an updated version of it, but they couldn’t due to a long and complicated court battle between the song and Mattel themselves. Regardless, the movie was really great, but this song sucks.
4- Rich Flex by Drake & 21 Savage (Hot 100 Peak: #2): Yep, another Drake song, and one that I think is worse. This one comes from a collaboration project that he made with 21 Savage last year called “Her Loss” (Which has one of the worst album covers I have seen) and this was the song that got big due to the chorus going viral in Tik Tok because of how ridiculous it was, and for once I agree with that accursed app. Both rappers don’t give it their all with Drake having more of the song than 21 which doesn’t make it sound like a duo collab at all. The lyrics about bragging and flexing are boring and not worth discussing other than the chorus which is just corny in a bad way and the beat sounds unoriginal on both sides, I’ve heard these types of beats from the late 2010’s, the producers weren’t breaking new territory with making this type of sound. Lastly it doesn’t help that this song is almost 4 minutes when it doesn’t have the material to even cover such a length. So Drake and 21, can you do summin for me? Can you not make another record like this for me?
3- Thinkin’ Bout Me by Morgan Wallen (Hot 100 Peak: #7): In place of rap, country has been slowly overtaking it as the most popular genre in the US, for better or worse. Despite it getting arguably its biggest time in the spotlight since the 70’s, the genre has been getting controversy over its misogyny and heavy political undertones, which we will get to in a bit. The biggest country artist right now is Morgan Wallen, where this year he released his newest album with 36 songs, which is one of the most ridiculous things ever and of course, one of the songs from this album is the biggest song of the year. However, the worst song from this album isn’t that, but it’s for this track right here. The pseudo-trap country production sounds mismanaged with the instruments going at odds with the beat and no attempt at making them flow together. But what lands this song this high is the godawful writing, which is a post-breakup song where he wonders that the girl who left him is still thinking about him despite being with a new man, which is not only manipulative, but it makes him sound clingy and desperate like she needs a restraining order from him. Of course the passionate singing makes it worse like he’s singing like he means every single word of it like dude, just leave her be and move on. Ever since the controversy from early 2022, it sounds like Morgan isn’t evolving as an artist and recycling the same music knowing that it’s the safe option and for fear of stepping on people’s toes. If this is what “playing it safe” sounds like, then he really needs a sound revamp.
2- PRC by Peso Pluma & Natanael Cano (Hot 100 Peak: #33): The most unusual thing about music this year is the fact that Regional Mexican music suddenly exploded into popularity. There were signs of it slowly bubbling when a few songs did chart in 2021 but this year was when these songs really crossed the border and took the US by storm with the biggest artist being Peso Pluma. Personally, I liked this trend though I get why to most it all sounds the same, however this song is the worst to get big from this trend. Translated, the song is about being a tough guy who deals drugs and proudly brags about the Mexican drug cartels, which is not a good look and honestly gives both your country and your genre (corrido tumbao) a bad name. Both singers deliver it with this gravely and nasal tone that sounds more annoying than tough and demanding and the production is bad even for this genre with the horns being way too loud and the guitars sounding like they’re being plucked out of tune. There are other songs that I like more and have more personality, but this song just blows and should’ve been stopped at the border and deported back to Mexico.
Dishonorable Mentions:
Ain’t That Some by Morgan Wallen: Another one of the tracks from Morgan Wallen’s 36 song album that made the YE, and while it has the same production problems as Thinkin’ Bout Me, it doesn’t have the terrible lyrics as that one.
Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2 by PinkPantheress & Ice Spice: The glitchy production doesn’t work for me because of the lack of melody and PinkPantheress autotuned vocals don’t help, but the lyrics are fine and Ice Spice’s verse is decent in a vacuum.
Tomorrow 2 by Glorilla & Cardi B: I like the beat for this one, but Glorilla is a really bad rapper and while Cardi is okay in here, her verses aren’t great with some messy lyrics
I Wrote The Book by Morgan Wallen: Yet another bad track from this record, which shows just how creatively bankrupt this entire album is, but the trap country production is actually tolerable here to an extent.
Shirt by SZA: This one might be an unpopular opinion because I see a lot like this song, but I get no joy listening to it because it just sounds depressing and joyless with its vibe with no mood or atmosphere to back it up.
Players by Coi Leray: Sampling an oversampled hip hop song and doing it poorly over a song with cliché lyrics and rapping with no charisma? Yeah no thank you
11- La Bebe (Remix) by Yng Lvcas & Peso Pluma: A rare instance where Regional Mexican and reggaeton collided, and the worst. The one saving grace is that the beat is fine and does have more of an interesting sound than your typical reggaeton song, but it wasn’t enough to save the especially bad singing.
1- Try That In A Small Town by Jason Aldean: (Hot 100 Peak: #1): Country was really big this year which as I said, had its share of controversy, with one of them being that it has gotten very politically charged. Two songs of that nature did get big, with the other one Rich Men North Of Richmond by Oliver Anthony Music missing this list because I find the lyrics to be very relatable despite the odd second verse and Oliver’s singing being very rough. Despite that, I get why this song would get hated, but the one thing that I don’t get is equating that one with this song, when they could not be further apart from each other. For one, Jason Aldean sings about how small towns are better by saying that in the big cities, there is violence from riots and fear mongering on how they’re gonna take away his guns, which is the most backwards ass whiny bitching I have heard and isn’t remotely true. Protests also sprang up in small towns which I guess he was too ignorant to know and that it would be unconstitutional to have all guns confiscated, but he doesn’t care when he wants to be right and have people believe the BS that he spews out. In other words, trying to stir the fears of those living in rural small towns and give them a sense of empty pride. Now I never agreed that the song was pro-lynching or racist since despite the protests being heavily implied to be the BLM protests of 2020, I don’t believe that he had any racial undertones in the writing, that would imply that he had more tricks up his sleeve which he doesn’t. Also unlike Oliver Anthony who was being genuine on what he was singing about, Jason Aldean sounds more like he’s having a teleprompter being read to him and parroting some guy’s views just to get cheap radio play and attract controversy for attention. Oh and the processed country rock production is generic and his singing is too. This song doesn’t make me angry like its reputation and infamy has been doing to plenty of people this year, but it’s still one of those witless, thin skinned songs I’ve heard and made an already bad year even worse. With this, I rank Try That In A Small Town as the worst hit of 2023.
And that’s it, this was my list for the worst hits of 2023, soon enough I’ll get to working on the ten songs that I did like and they have songs that I really liked more than these bad songs that I didn’t totally hate.

Worst including the horrible Christmas cover metal album sadly Otep God Slayer i didn’t enjoy all the songs covers after covers and the horrible vocals and poor mixing songs like California Girls from Katy Perry and Good 4 U by Rodriguez is horrible and unlistenble why ruin great songs from a Nu Metal band that is worse than Limp Bizkit
