This week for a great spooky month new Autopsy arrives for fans of Death Metal and great album to enjoy on Halloween
Y’know, for as much as the internet seems fascinated by the “weird bands” of old—Frank Zappa, the Butthole Surfers, Ween, Mr. Bungle, and even recent ones like System of a Down—I’m surprised that almost nobody has talked about The Tubes.
They had a biting satirical edge, an intricate live show that involved the members wearing costumes and portraying characters, and a musical style that blended punk, glam rock, and synth-driven pop. They were essentially the Falsies of the 1970s-80s. And they had multiple hits! Yet nowadays, the Tubes are mostly only known as one-hit wonders for “She’s a Beauty” and for having a brief appearance in the oft derided movie Xanadu.
I wonder why they’re not talked about much. In any case, here’s “White Punks on Dope.”
Mike Portnoy is back in Dream Theater now.

This is so damn unexpected, I thought they were gonna continue with Mike Mangini for years! I loved Mangini’s drumming and he was truly talented, but Mike Portnoy was the true creative force of the band and contributed a lot to the songwriting as well. So I’m definitely excited to hear what comes of it!
Although I have to admit, I was kinda hoping they’d do like a one-off show where both Portnoy and Mangini played drums, like how King Crimson had two drummers for a while.
Was that just me who was hoping for that? I know having two drummers would be hard to pull off with the complexity of their music style, but if any band could do it, it would be Dream Theater.
Mangini is soo criminally underrated during his DT run. I even came up with a solution before that he was an upgrade to the band because of his faster hand speed and technical skills. But Portnoy is on his own league but way more commercially popular.

That’s because they are one hit wonders, She’s A Beauty was their only Top 10 hit in 1983. They did have a previous Top 40 song in 1981, I Don’t Want To Wait Anymore, which went to number 39 on the pop charts.

Maybe their big hit was just too different from their other stuff?
Congratulations to Taylor Swift for her 10th number one song with “Cruel Summer”. Right behind We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Shake It Off, Blank Space, Bad Blood, Look What You Made Me Do, Cardigan, Willow, All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) and Anti-Hero. So happy that Cruel Summer made it to the top, it’s one of my favorite pop songs right now even though it’s from 2019.
