Alexi Laiho: To die at 41… I’m going to be 41 this year. Kind of makes me think. I’ve honestly never been a big Children of Bodom fan - that’s because I’m not a very big fan of Finnish Death Metal at all. Not so much because of the music, but because of the sometimes extreme (socio-political) views of certain Finnish musicians. Here I am actually much closer to Swedish metal. Yet he seemed to have been a loving stepfather and family man. And he was a divine shredder. So I will miss him as an artist. He now plays guitar where Finnish death metal headz go.
 
Whether Gene Simmons and Kiss are irrelevant or not, I don’t want to comment on that here. Certainly Simmons’ views are rather antiquated. Nevertheless, in my opinion he definitely points out a certain problem of today’s bands. To simply dismiss him as an old lasso-tongue, I personally think is wrong. ‘m not trying to defend the man, I don’t care enough about him personally to do that. Especially as a human being. That said, I think part of his criticism is well founded in fact.

There’s some pretty good Finnish stuff scattered around (Big fan of Kalmah and especially Insomnium) but yeah 41 is just ridiculously young and tragic. Seems absolutely surreal.

I always loved his trademark guitar… one of the best looking and sounding I’ve ever seen.

Yeah those top three I could honestly rank in any order, each is pretty excellent. Rather unique sound.

Tbh, their first 5 albums are the only great shit from them.
 
I’ll give an excemption card with Hexed. To think I was stoked from their comeback almost two years ago gone wasted.

In all honesty I haven’t paid as much attention since Blooddrunk; the first three are pretty much interchangeably teriffic and through AYDY still good. Now’s probably the time to go through the most recent few I guess. My big issue may be I got burned out on a bunch of them listening to nothing but them on repeat a decade or so ago lol

I want to get into Amorphis, haven’t yet probably because the stylistic change over the years is a little jarring but I’m sure given time I’ll get used to it.
