How do you make an enemy that isn’t a finate state machine?
By being a coding noob. Instead of having one “state” variable that controls whether the enemy is idle, moving, attacking, or doing something else, I had a separate variable for each of those actions. So I’m fixing that, and now my code is less terrible.
