Of course not. I’m a brony that hates furries. Furries are just people who are dressed in anthropomorphic animal suits and walk around like they’re mascots of a zoo. Bronies are people who love My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and a lot of bronies don’t even wear suits. Some do, but they’re not anthropomorphic mostly.

I’m sure some people here probably take one look at my screen-name, or cutesy skunk avatar, and think, “Ew! A furry! Kill it!”

To which, I don’t care, (and a bit ironic, coming from a brony that wishes for others to accept, and not hate them for loving a children’s show) but truthfully I’ve never really been very active in the “furry fandom,” I’ve never attended any furry conventions, never made/wore a fursuit, (nor do I fetishize those goofy outfits, like many are stereotyped) or any of the usual stereotypes, so truthfully, this may surprise some, but I’m not much of a furry.

My so-called skunk “fursona” was actually an old StarFox character OC/persona/avatar I used to have as a kid on StarFox message boards. Back when I was a kid “Star Fox 64” was almost as huge as Mario, Zelda, FF7, or Pokémon, so yes, similar to people making their own Ponysona, or their own Sonic character, we used to do that with StarFox, as well. I didn’t know what a furry was honestly back then, but everybody else had their own SF OC, or fan-character, and had them as their avatar. and I just found that cool, so I wanted my own. (And almost all of ‘em were foxes, or wolves, so I wanted to be something unique, so I randomly chose a skunk. Looking back, it was kinda clever sense skunks were considered “stinky,” or “nasty/gross” critters, so I wanted people to like me for who I was, not for “what” I was.)

Regardless, I do admit ever sense childhood I do like anthropomorphic cartoon, or video game characters, like the TMNT, the aforementioned StarFox series, Sonic the Hedgehog series, Disney’s old (and sadly underrated) “Robin Hood” movie, and such. So I definitely understand the appeal of animal characters, as you can kinda do more with them, and draw them in more different ways then humans.

I do like looking at, or drawing anthro’ art, and have my own cartoon characters, (most of which I don’t post online, in fear of them being stolen) and such, so I don’t know if that makes me a “furry” in others’ eyes, but I don’t care. I never really considered myself such, but I do respect the furry fandom for their art, music, and such they make, much like the brony fandom, and people forget there’s “creepy/weird” fans in every fandom, even their own ones, which is why both furries, and bronies get a bad rap online.

So in regards to the question of if bronies are furries, or not, maybe yes, maybe no, but does it matter? Just enjoy whatever you want.

Well, bronies do seem fond of dragons, griffons, changelings, diamond dogs, abyssinians, and other species introduced in MLP.
So maybe we’re more “furry” then we think. lol

You know, I’m reminded of an article I read… I don’t even know how long ago now. Years and years at this point. Anyway, the article was about fursuits and fursonas and all that stuff, and I remember one guy they talked to who had a skunk persona too. And his reason for that was because he’d kind of had a rough time of things in his life, and he felt some kind of kinship, if that’s the right word for it, with an animal that causes people to leave when they see it.

Not really quite the same, but still kind of interesting, I guess.

And yes, foxes and wolves have always been a bit overly represented. Canines in general, really.

That’s kinda interesting, while I don’t feel like the most misunderstood person in the world, I suppose I can kinda relate to that, as well. I’m not that off-putting IRL, but I’m kinda quiet, I look like a young teenager despite my age, (short & skinny IRL) so I can be misunderstood. Everybody is at times.

Plus when you get past the stinkiness, skunks can actually be adorable. (Look at the one from “Bambi.”) So I like to think it has hidden depths.

Yeah, canines & felines are very common. Skunks are apparently not rare, but not too common either. (In the StarFox fanbase I only knew 2 other “skunks.”) Skunk OCs aren’t very common in the Sonic fabase either, thanks to the Archie Comic/Ken Penders character Geoffrey St. John, whom wasn’t a very likeable character…
(I refuse to accept Penders’ headcanon about Geoffrey & Princess Sally apparently having an intimate off-screen relationship also.)

For awhile I considered getting rid of the whole skunk gag, and renaming my DA page, and such due to the stigmas, and hate “furries” get online, (and as I said I’m not a huge furry) but I guess the skunk thing just kinda stuck for me. So I eventually started using said avatar here, and in fan pics. And in those huge Derpibooru/brony fan community pics, I just have people portray me as a small on-model MLP:FIM stylized skunk with glasses.

Giraffe superiority
i got zero problems with furries, except when they don’t respect your opinion.

for example, what ive learned within both fandoms is:

if I post a pony in furry chat, most will go: Ew feral / ew pony

and if i go into some random mlp chat, and post some anthro sona, most will say: ew furry / ew anthro / >no hooves

its a shame that happens, but you’ll always find someone from other side who will accept you like you are.

@Beau Skunky I think most of it is just a ‘legacy hatedom’ thing, due to early furry/brony wars
Like how the chans hate furries due to their behaviour/raids specifically during 2003-5 (the formative years) + a good amount of con organisers ‘falling from grace’ due to CP/beast arrests in the same time frame.
So y’all forevermore stained as the “degenerate dogfuckers” now no matter how many you kick out.
Then new kids drop in and they’re like “Euw! Don’t associate with those people! Look at all the disgusting things they do!”
Not helped much by the recent blowups over Kero or the discord admin team, of course.

Well, every fandom has bad eggs.
In fact, recently a bunch of video game tournament guys got busted for perv’ing on people, and a popular brony critic was outted as a pedo’creep whom was creeping on some underage MLP fans. So honestly that has happened in EVERY fandom. Not to mention, Star Wars fans hassling actors, and such from the SW movies they didn’t like. (Poor Jake Lloyd.)
I’ve seen some bronies say creepy things too.

And it’s not like the “haters” are any better. A few years back, I heard some guy actually tried to gas a furry convention. Now …I can understand not liking the furry fandom, or finding some of things they do weird, (I got mixed opinions on it myself) but that’s too much.

I think it just comes down to whether you consider yourself a furry.
Coincidentally, I am a furry, but I do not consider bronies/pegasisters to be furries.

As I said I’m not even sure I count as one, as I’ve never really been active in the furry fandom, but I don’t mind if people consider me such, and I’ll admit the furry fandom, like the brony one makes alot of good fanworks.

Maybe, but I do think like bronies, furries get too bad a rap online sometimes. Most of ‘em are honestly just cartoonists who like drawing animal people.

I know I jokingly say “Ew furry!” here sometimes, but that’s because I’m trying to be ironic, or mock people that say that constantly.

Thanks to stuff like CSI’s notorious (and ignorant) episode on furries, (stereotyping them as sexual deviants) alot of people don’t even understand what furry fans truely are, and because of the demonizations of them in the media, and online, understandably alot of anthro’ artists don’t usually associate with said fandom.
Admittedly, I try to distance myself a li’l too, because of that, but as I said I have nothing against them either, and I don’t care if others consider me such.

I don’t mind refering to myself as a brony though, because to me that just means “MLP fan.”

What if I were to tell you that I’m both a brony and a furry at the same time? We exist.

Im confronted too that allegation but havent never understand the point, why people throw these concepts into same bucket.
I used to know bronies are people who appreciate Lauren Faust’s creation about Little ponies, not only ponies themself but whole worldbuild around them too. What appreciate furries? Just human-shaped furry animals and so?
Ok ponies have furry coat but thats too little to aver they are same. Why nobody dont call common cat and dog owners furries? They like too furry pets.

Why are you comparing MLP fans and pet owners? That isn’t comparable.

And MLP fans can like different things in the franchise. Some of us DO like the series BECAUSE it stars non-humans as one reason, and some of us like other series the same way, and other series that star mainly quadruped animals are often considered furry too, like The Lion King, so I don’t see why MLP can’t be. It’s okay if not everyone who likes it isn’t a furry themselves, I have seen Sonic fans like and draw Sonic art and porn, which is often considered furry, while saying they are not themselves a furry, which is okay. But it doesn’t mean that the series can’t be, just not every person who likes it is furry.
