Ah, but there's microscopic fecal matter *everywhere*. If an egg is visually clean, the amount of chicken poop on the shell is negligible, and you're not going to lick the shell as is, you're going to immerse the whole egg in boiling water.

If it floats vertically with just a small bit above water, it's still very likelyfine. If it floats like a cork it's very likely bad.
