Anyone here like electrical and electronics? I mostly like fire alarms, lighting and other electrical stuff that I like. I actually have a collection of fire alarms. Its weird but its one of my hobbies that I do, which I have two systems set up in my room, a security system and a fire alarm system.

I also solder electronics and repair them if they’re not functioning properly. I also do Arduino (learning at the moment). I also like lighting and I know loads of it. Hell, I even know street light manufacturers and models from the old days to the modern days. Manufacturers like GE (General Electric), Eaton Lighting (Cooper Lighting) and much more. So I’m actually a multi enthusiast.

When I was getting my degree I used to be a Class II for the state of Wisconsin, doing the university’s telephony and data networks, and maintaining or installing the alarms and security systems.

The telephony, data, and fire alarms were all state of the art. But the security alarms were all the best we could find from 1950.

Tubes and wax-wrapped wires everywhere.

Sometimes I’d add three extra powered but not used tubes just to make the box more confusing.

People would try to break into places on campus by treating the security alarms like they were modern, but they never succeeded.

One time security actually found the would-be-robbers standing in front of the open box just admiring it and being confused.

“What the hell are you doing with tube-based security systems?!” one of the robbers asked.

“Catching you” I presume was the response.

I’ve also done lighting, but in my case it was stage lighting. Big carbon arc spotlights and rooster tailed spots 45 feet in the air over the audience.

Right now I think the weirdest thing on the planet is LED strip lights. Those little flexible tapes of hundreds of exposed circuits … they are amazing!

I’m installing about 10’ of them under my cabinets in the kitchen today. With double sided tape and a soldering iron and a 12 volt adapter.

It’s the fucking golden age :)

I’ve had an interest in electronics since I was a kid. I had a few of those electronics labs that Radio Shack used to sell (still have one). Never really went anywhere with it until the last few years, when I got into adding LED lighting to models and radio control cars (most pony related). It started with this:

Currently have 2 R/C cars and a 3rd pickup planned (the latter may become a charity auction item at next year’s HarmonyCon), and another 1/32 scale semi. Plus I’m currently working on an 8’ aircraft carrier with full lighting and rotating radars.

Then I’m also into railroad signalling, which involves relay logic circuits. Have a bunch of the relays (that weigh up to 10 lbs each) and some signals, and have made my own circuits, including wiring up a crossing gate to work. Here’s an example of the relays:
