Quick question about improvment

Nukley

You know, im a bit curious, I thought I had improved on my art. So I made a drawing of applejack a while back

Which got the best votes from all previous art, it actually got into the positives.

Even at the time of uploading, I actually had a new peice of art nearly finished for uploading, which I finally posted today. I thought it looked better, but its votes are in the negatives.

Here is that image

Is it really worse than the applejack one? Its based off the same refrence, and I thought I did a better job with it. What do you guys think?

Let me start out by saying that between those two pieces, you definitely have improved, almost objectively. However, the things to consider when predicting how many upvotes an art piece will get are as follows:

  • Who is the character? (More popular characters = more views)
  • Who is the artist? (More popular artists will have more tag watchers = more views)
  • What is involved in the picture? (besides searching for characters, people will also search for certain things or activities, so check to see you’ve added as many tags as you can that are relevant)
  • How good is the art itself within its own category? (is it really good for a vector image? or is it very detailed for something that is fully shaded?)
  • How good is the art composition? How appealing does it look at a small, thumbnail size?
  • When is the art published? (Timing can also be a factor sometimes, seeing how most people on this site and probably even the fandom as a whole are in North America to my understanding.)
  • [18+ NSFW Art Only] How enticing is the overall sex appeal of the image?

You’re new on this site, and you seem to be new to art in general so the only thing that’s really a factor for the downvotes is art quality and character choice. It’s an improvement over your old piece, but the fact that the art to some would still be considered poorly drawn due to the ugly looking wavy and inconsistent lines and the tail kind of looking like it’s just a blob rather than actual hair, it means you need to be able to view your art from a different perspective.

Someone who comes across your newest piece who hasn’t seen anything else you’ve done might just think “oh, this is just a bad drawing of a random OC that doesn’t even have a name from an unknown artist” because they haven’t seen your previous work. If they did, then they might additionally think “but at least they’re starting to improve.”

No, it’s better but the reason why it didn’t receive as much positive reception simply comes down to what I’ve stated before.

I hope this helps, make sure to keep learning about everything you can, and you will continue to improve!
