I agree with this somewhat. I love Alice in Chains and Nirvana, but everytime I put on an album I get pretty tired of it before I even make it to the halfway point. Maybe if I could empathize more with being a drugged-out addict with an infinite amount of relationship issues I could find it more interesting.

Pearl Jam get an exception from this because their lyrics aren’t 100% doom and gloom and musically they’re more alternative rock than grunge rock. They only get lumped in because of Eddie Vedder’s vocal style.

Rock was always moody….its the child of the Blues which is known for it’s sad and depressing tune

If anything, Grunge was a return to Rock’s Origins after It had strayed away from it for decades

I know that Cinema sins isn’t perfect and even they have admitted it, but there are definitely movies like the Emoji Movie and the Twilight series that even their detractors agree deserve to be torn to pieces.

What set Pearl Jam apart from other grunge bands is because they had their own style and like you said, weren’t all gloom and depressing shit like Nirvana was. It’s too bad that their popularity more or less ruined the landscape of rock with thousands upon thousands of bands imitating their sound and especially Eddie Vedder’s voice. I still love them as a band, but I can’t deny that they’ve had a negative influence on rock overall.

But don’t you think that rock should have more than just one mood? Even a lot of the earliest rock and blues songs weren’t depressing and moody. Muddy Waters’ classic song “Mannish Boy,” for example, was a braggadocious song whose lyrics wouldn’t be unfitting with those of a lot of the cock rock anthems of the ‘80s–and it was released in 1955.

Yeahhhh, if Pearl Jam hadn’t taken off, we might never have had to deal with Creed.

@NorrisThePony
Yeah, Pearl Jam was one of the better grunge bands because they realized that there were more topics to write about than just “I’m depressed, my life sucks and so does the world.”

But we braved through them and post-grunge* in general so Pearl Jam is still at the top.

*Disclaimer: I don’t hate post-grunge as much as other people do actually

@Broken Adam
How though? How does a group known for loud abrasive rap mixed with an electric production and literal noise got inspired by two guys in stupid outfits and hairs singing party and club anthems? I don’t understand.

Cock Rock had a ridiculous monopoly on Rock before Grunge came along, to the degree that it was oversaturated , you can’t blame “Sad” Rock Songs for the fact that “Cock”Rock failed to evolve , if guys like Bon Jovi could evolve then what’s the excuse for the rest of the genre?

Even Axl Rose hated what Glam became and was subverting it with his songs portraying the negatives of sex and Drugs rather than celebrating them and dressed up more like a Biker Misfit than the British Crossdresser that Bowie made popular, which is why stood out so much from the others of that era

To this day some people argue that he was “Proto Grunge” rather than glam because of this.

You’re talking exclusively about glam metal not surviving through the rise of grunge, which was only one of my many points. So what’s your excuse for the depressing rut that rock has been stuck in ever since grunge’s rise and subsequent downfall?

I don’t know, I feel like we need some sort of cock rock revival or something. Considering that moody pop and emo rap have replaced rock as the genre for depressed people to listen to, I think it’s time for rock to do a complete 180. It’s also because unlike probably most of the people on this site, I’m not emo myself nor do I suffer from depression so I’ve always gravitated towards stupid, mindless and fun music rather than moody, depressing stuff.

I’ve noticed that when it comes to the mainstream music I like, it tends to be rock from the 80s and before, and pop/pop-rock in the 90s and beyond.

Would be interesting to compare several #1 hits (in the US, at least) from the 60s-80s with the #1 hits from the 90s-2010s.

@ILoveMyoozik
Not sure if we’ll see a “cock rock” revival, but I do think it’s possible that we could see an end to post-grunge given the fact that the “classic rock throwback” groups such as The Black Keys and Greta Van Fleet seem to be getting more popular.

Uh-huh. So what about all the new rock bands (and I mean actual rock bands, not the alternative/electropop bands that are considered rock because they have people playing instruments) that are all moody and depressing? I don’t think this is an example of “other subgenres needed to get with the times,” as much as it is one of “grunge made it trendy to be angry and depressed, and rock has not recovered from that ever since then.”

I’d love to see a revival of, if not cock rock explicitly, then some form of rock that’s actually fun as opposed t just being moody and depressing. And keep in mind that I have depression, yet I tire of hearing artists sing about it. Hell, I prefer the fun side of rock; when I’m down, I don’t want to listen to music that makes me feel worse, I want to listen to music that gets me pumped up, dammit.

Yea, it seems like there’s barely any fun & energetic rock anymore. You won’t really hear anything like Weird Science, Mexican Radio, Land of Confusion, Big Time, or Help! on the stations that focus on modern rock these days. Of course, it seems like part of the reason why is that anyone who tries to make a fun & energetic rock song these days quickly gets labeled as “pop” by fans and/or music stations and shoved off onto the pop stations, or otherwise gets pushed in the direction of making more pop (or pop-like) music.

It’s the truth, sadly. I’ve seen bands like Maroon 5, Walk the Moon, and even our local legends Parachute start off as good pop rock, but unfortunately due to how the industry works fall further and further down the pop rabbit hole.
Land of Confusion

Heh, it’s funny you should mention that one, since it’s actually rather serious lyric-wise if you listen to it. It has themes regarding war and politics, and a music video to match. Though I will agree that it is quite energetic and upbeat musically. Hell, I think if we are going to have more songs about depression and stuff, we should have more that are like that, where the music is way more upbeat than the lyrics.
