While I like the concept of downvotes in general, they are rarely an indicator of quality on FiMfiction, as I usually just see people dislike gorey or gay fics as opposed to anything else. I mean that may just be what I look at there, but I don’t think it’s really fair to judge anything based on downvotes. Upvotes or faves tho, yeah.
Both are still subjective tho and you really need to see for yourself.
@Broken Adam
People have no idea how the downvote system’s sposed to work and just use it as a “I don’t like this” or a “I disagree” button, when nine times out of ten it’s used to filter out spam or irrelevant content.
The upvotes are used to say “I like this”. It’s only logical to assume that the downvotes mean “I don’t like this”. Unless there’s a different meaning for upvotes, then the two are fundamentally opposites.
@Scrabbleman
Then Downvotes AND Upvotes both are a truly bad way to gauge quality of anything. More like “this is what the faceless masses think” which tends to be an homogenized mass of the same likes and dislikes.
@LightningBolt
That’s why I always preferred the 5-star rating system that Newgrounds uses. Besides, if something is off-topic, why not implement a report system instead and not just downvote to hell?
@NorrisThePony
The whole “if we weaken downvotes even a tiny bit the whole site will turn into facebook” is also one of the reasons to why reddit is hopeless
Especially when the most popular posts are already facebook tier One Liners and terrible dad jokes or Movie references

FF.net: We want you to be creative! as long as you follow these 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 guidelines!
AO3: We want you to be creative and help us preserve the cultural works of fans because quality and style does not denote value as a part of the human condition, all art wi worth preserving!
@Thanotos Omega
Yeah basically. Also FF.net disallows smut, while Ao3 is absolutely fine with it in any form. Ao3 also assumes that the reader is smart enough to read guidelines and tags.
@icey wicey 1517
True, though bad CGI or people poorly interacting with CGI can be glaring. There’s a reason some say that CGI + practical is the best in most cases.
@icey wicey 1517
Fury Road is the benchmark imo. CGI is best when it’s used to enhance quality set design and stunt work, instead of replacing it entirely.
Reddit is also really really bad for hypocritically circlejerking the same unfunny in-jokes (we did it, Reddit!) and then REEEEing at every repost they see
