That’s not what meant, opposite even. I mean different sapient species, what ever alien, Earth based or whatever should be treatment as above of animal, and theory equal to human in ethical and moral sense no matter what difference in mentality

Didn’t aplied that you should do that. I’m in fact all for it if somebody made truly alien beings but I dont think you should stick if humans if can’t do or dont want starfish aliens. There are plenty things in between what could be fine/great. Again for fantasy and low sci fi can it may be enough.

When it comes to a variety of aliens, I say go for Star Wars and a tv series called Farscape by Jim Henson Production.
 
What makes the latter special is how they actually use animations for the non-human aliens, allowing for variety in a sense that other movies and tv series cannot as readily do while keeping the character relatable of sorts or at least distinct. Heck, the Pilot is very much a “star fish” style alien which is probably one of the most sympathetic characters in the show.

Why do so many modern cartoon characters’ smiles look more like they’re eating albino worms?

Intelligence and sapience are such complex things that treating beings that have them as being human is incredibly flawed thinking, imagine a being that could not feel sadness or understand empathy but was still otherwise human? What if that being had other emotions that we can literally not comprehend because we have no frame of reference for it? You are acting like being sapient means that it has human like intelligence, there is research that shows that some fungus forests have an ability to think and comprehend their surroundings in ways that we cannot fully understand, octopi have very advanced problem solving skills but since they have no real concept of language or empathy we cannot communicate with them in a meaningful manner despite being able to communicate in a limited fashion with much less intelligent animals. This isn’t even getting into the ways that their culture could have developed from such different mindsets mind you. If you want to tell a story about characters with human thoughts and human values in a human culture then just use humans, putting a hat on a pig doesn’t make it a professor and putting scales on a human doesn’t make them alien, it just makes you look lazy.
 
Also I find it somewhat amusing that you are using what I consider one of the better representations of an alien creature as your avatar.

Now this is something I hadn’t considered, leaving me to wonder if there is reason for such parallels other then mere coincidence. To have the team for the Guardians of the Galaxy relate so strongly with the crew of Farscape has me concerned.

Both are plants aliens though, with quite a few details in the show showing Zotoh Zhaan’s plant physiology.

I know that but they are extremely different in personality and backstory and whatnot so they don’t feel like they really serve the same role story and interaction wise. I dunno maybe I’m just too picky. :/

Admittedly, for Zotoh Zhaan, this comes after a couple of seasons and was because the actress was being made sick from the blue paint and constant makeup used on her body. This, and the just having to play such a character for over three years.

While my favorite aliens are allways this type of aliens. What is also part of reason why Kyubey is my favorite anime character.
