The biggest problem with recent Star Trek media (everything from the mid-2000s to present) is that it feels distinctly un-Trek-like, as if the writers don’t want to/know how to write Star Trek.
There’s a much higher focus on action in recent Trek material and less of a focus on philosophical debate. I’m not sure if this stems from 9/11’s influence on sci-fi, but it’s kind of fallen into this fast-paced “shoot ‘em up” rut recently. And IMO, the fight scenes have never been one of Star Trek’s high points in the past.
