Here’s the thing though. I actually enjoy a lot of superhero films.
 
The things I like and the things I dislike are often hairs apart.
 
For instance, I hate overpowered heroes, but I love watching overpowered heroes be beaten. It’s a duality where the latter cannot exist without the former.
 
And really, a lot of my problems come from the fandoms of such things. I wish I could gush about a villain I like, but comic fans always respond by pointing out all the heroes who can beat them up. Why would I want to know that?

While I liked Get Out, I have to admit that I don’t get why some critics were calling it a horror-comedy. It just seemed like straightforward horror to me.

That can get annoying quickly. They should at least talk about the things that said villains did that are worth talking about first.

It’s like, I actually LIKE Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. but fans of it make it sound goddamn insufferable, such that I basically can’t talk to anyone about TTGL because all the things anime fans focus on are the things that wind me up.

To me, it’s a mystery thriller rather than horror, unlike Us.

The biggest problem with recent Star Trek media (everything from the mid-2000s to present) is that it feels distinctly un-Trek-like, as if the writers don’t want to/know how to write Star Trek.
 
There’s a much higher focus on action in recent Trek material and less of a focus on philosophical debate. I’m not sure if this stems from 9/11’s influence on sci-fi, but it’s kind of fallen into this fast-paced “shoot ‘em up” rut recently. And IMO, the fight scenes have never been one of Star Trek’s high points in the past.

“Tone is hard to tell through text” is something that I’ve always found to be, well, a load of bullshit. The “tone” of writing is the choice of words and the overall style that it’s written.

I honestly find that concept fascinating. As an Aspie, I’ve experienced the inability to understand tone when speaking to people in real life, and it took years to be able to comprehend sarcasm and non-verbal communication.
 
That’s why I usually do strikethrough text or add :333 at the end of a post to indicate sarcasm/joking.
