Time to get a little long winded. And maybe sound like a terrible person.
My sister made me watch the film _The Fault in our Stars_with her once or twice. Now if you don’t know, The Fault in our Stars is about a young woman with cancer. And cancer is one of the most horrible disease one can ever get. I lost my favorite uncle (who was also gay coincidentally) to cancer. And at a certain point while watching that film, I was ACTIVELY routing for the cancer. The entire message of that movie is that we should not judge nor identify people based solely upon their illness. However the film never takes any step to meaningfully characterize its lead beyond the fact that she has cancer and that she has feelings about this boy. And if a character’s entire characterization is based upon their relationship with other characters then you have written a bad character. This being one of my biggest problems with Connie from Steven Universe but that is a discussion for a later date. Any time that she isn’t moping about her cancer or swooning over this (also terribly characterized) boy she is being an unapologetic douche canoe.
