That’s part of why it’s ridiculous. His white knights are defending him by pointing out that he’s been working on the sequels since right after finishing the first one, but all I can say to that is, NOBODY CARES!

Exactly. It’s the highest grossing film of all time, and yet it made ZERO impact on pop culture apart from people making fun of it.

I have never felt such deep, primordial desire to strangle a fictional character as I have after watching Avatar.

Sort of. He went to the aliens (I can’t even remember their species name, that’s how forgettable it was) 3 months before the scientists were supposed to come in, and was supposed to tell them what was going on so that they could negotiate a deal for the Unobtanium (yes, it was literally called that). But instead of doing this, he was so pleased at being able to walk and run (since his human self is in a wheelchair) that he basically just pranced around and hung out with the aliens for 3 months, and then was like, “Shit, I forgot all about that.”
 
And then the military intervened, which was never supposed to actually happen, but the warmonger general just couldn’t help being a warmonger and things pretty much escalated quickly from there.
 
Note that I ONLY remembered this because I read a summary a while back.

Earth is fucked. A man, Jake Sully, is flown halfway across the universe because he’s the only one who can mind transfer to his dead twin’s meat robot. He’s given one job: he has 1 year to tell the blue cat people that the humans need to mine the macguffin muffins beneath their house to make Earth slightly less shitty.
 
He instead spends the entire time fucking the chief’s daughter. When his 1 year is up humanity has no choice but to declare war on the alien cat people. Jake sides with the aliens and ensures near genocide of both species.
 
Earth is still fucked. Hundreds of good men and women are dead billions of lightyears from Earth. The Na’vi has been murdered by the millions and their ancestral homes razed. The chief is dead and so is the daughter’s fiance. Sigourney Weaver is damned to the alien afterlife. And Jake Sully gets to continue fucking alien cat pussy.
