The Switch port of Dragon Quest XI is one of the very first Nintendo Switch games.
This is because when the game first announced back in 2015, it was slated for release on three different consoles. Two of them were the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS, but the third was a still-in-development console simply known by its codename “Nintendo NX”, which would eventually be fully revealed as the Nintendo Switch.
While Dragon Quest XI would release on PS4 and 3DS in July 2017, the Switch port would end up being delayed due to compatibility issues involving Unreal Engine 4. It would not be released until September 2019, roughly 4 years after the game was first announced.
