Asphyxiating myself. I started to do it because it felt pleasurable, but now, it does not even feel very good and I only do it out of habit. I do not think that it will be easy to stop, nor do I want to try to.
I am sixteen years old and I am acting like a disobedient toddler.
This is deviating from the subject, but I hate that I am not becoming independent, but I am scared to do things to become independent such as getting a summer job or driving.

Well if you don’t even enjoy it anymore it seems like it shouldn’t be to hard to avoid doing.
I wouldn’t worry too much about that, you will never be truly independent and 16 is hardly old enough for it to be abnormal.

The concept of hell can be traced as the origin of quite a few cases of depressive episodes in people.
When you have loved ones, friends, and just random strangers saying you’ll burn in hell for things outside of your control, it weighs on some people’s minds. It’s why I despise the concept, and find the very notion to be nothing more than a misanthropic excuse for holier than thou twatal fucks to get off on the idea of people they don’t like suffering.

If the only thing keeping you from becoming a sociopathic fuckwit is the idea that a beardy man in the sky will send you to the fiery pits of Tartus if you do, then it is time to seek help because you are not of stable mind.
And jails brim with god fearing Christians and Jews, while Muslims blow each other up for slight offenses, and all the while the threat of hell does little to dissuade them. So no, I find that idea to be pure bullshit.

Human beings are rarely of a stable mind in the first place, if anything a good religion can help dissuade that instability somewhat.
Muslims blow themselves up specifically because their religion says that they will not go to hell for such actions and will in fact go to heaven, as long as your religion has a good set of values the heaven/hell dichotomy can be quite beneficial overall.

Keep in mind, worshiping another god, being gay/having gay sex, unwed sex, etc are considered hell worthy offenses. I wouldn’t call these good values.
And you catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar, the promise of reward is a more powerful motivator than the threat of punishment. Psychologically speaking, we view rewards as forthcoming, and punishment as something way down the road, so one tends to be weaker.

The first one is about self preservation of the religion, the second seems to be about behavior control and the third is likely to keep power in the religion, not particularly good values but I’m not sure they go bellow neutral IMO.
That is why you need both a heaven and a hell for it to properly work, also don’t forget that any reward must also be weighed against the gratification of the act involved so having both helps a lot more than just one or the other.
