@Broken Adam
“But by the time Midwest Emo came along Emo started being more about being “anti Artsy” and Personal Lyrics than the Hardcore scene it came from .”
That is fucking absolute bullshit. Have you even read any of the lyrics to any Rites of Spring, Embrace, or Moss Icon song? Theres tons of personal shit in their lyrics. Introspection has always been a part of Emo.
If you really wanted to make this point of personal and anti-artsy youd be mentioning Screamo ala Saetia, pg.99, Jeromes Dream, I Have Dream, instead of the Midwest scene where Math Rock, Indie, and Alt Rock became prominent for Emo.
“One could argue that by the first Wave Emo definition MCR and even Green Day were more Emo Than Midwest bands like Weezer or SDRE because those were Punk while Weezer was Alt Rock”
Green Day would never be close to Emo they take a lot of their sound from Screeching Weasel, Crimpshrine, and Fifteen. I wasnt trying to use “le first wave definition” I was pointing out that the lines have always been blurred since back then.
Embrace and Turning Point are both hugely influential to Emo during the 80s yet they sound nothing alike. Jawbreaker and Bright Eyes are both Midwest bands yet Jawbreaker were a heavier Pop Punk band that moved into some type of Soft Grunge and Bright Eyes is Indie/Folk with some Alt-Country. There has never been a tine where Emo has had a clearly defined sound.
“Most Emos prefer Midwest Emo over The first wave anyway”
…So what? Emocore is still a huge piece of the foundation for Emo music as a whole. Why be dismissive of it because of lack of popularity?
