Alright then, well I don’t pay attention to indie music, only the songs and artists that go mainstream so that’s why.

Never heard of any of them?

I want to start a band, release a few albums that receive universal critical acclaim, split up due to interpersonal tensions, fade into obscurity with a respected but not quite as good solo career, then reunite with my band a decade later and prove we still got it by recording debatably our greatest album yet after our extensive comeback tour. Is that so hard to ask?

I meant mainstream as in getting a song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 or at least the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100.

Theres Lorde Lumineers and Imagine Dragons and Maybe Coldplay

Lorde is indie pop with a more artsy feel to it like Lana Del Rey  
Lumineers is indie folk  
Imagine Dragons have always been alternative and switched to electropop later on  
Coldplay was never indie and has always been alternative that crosses over to pop occasionally whether it’s soft rock like their earlier stuff before 2005 or even electropop like their later stuff after 2014.

Coldplay’s 2008 Album had Indie Influence.
 
And honestly Indie Rock is kind of a confusing term since both Garage Revival and Post Punk Revival got called that despite being different genres with different Influences and different values and sounds

Well, actually I lied. They never received critical acclaim. Critics always hated hair metal because they were dumb. Fans liked them, though.

Although it’s true that Critics preferred Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation over Apetite for Destruction which was weird

Is Guns N Roses even Hair Metal? They felt closer to AC DC than to Motley crue

Van Halen was hardly hair metal. They could be credited for creating the genre, but not all the elements were there; they had a lot more jazz and blues elements than many of the later hair bands, and didn’t have songs that were as tightly crafted. I will give you Def Leppard, though; I’m still surprised that critics liked them as much as they did.
 
As for whether GNR is hair metal, I’d personally say so. They sang about the same topics, and while some people debate whether they truly count… I mean, look at ’em.  
 
They may have been somewhat grittier than other hair bands, but come on. They were a hair band.

I mean… Guns N’ Roses were a hard rock band from the Los Angeles music scene that sang about sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, had members with teased hair and androgynous names (Izzy Stradlin), and were fronted by a blonde pretty boy with a high voice. I don’t know how else I’d classify them if not hair metal.
 
I have seen some people try to call them grunge, though, which… is way more wrong than I’ll ever be. Like, didn’t Kurt Cobain hate them because they weren’t grungey?

They were pretty much the Aerosmith/ACDC of the 80’s, Glam Metal is more Poppy, Hard Rock is more accurate , maybe Arena Rock
 
And Cobain only Hated Axl himself , which isn’t suprising as they both had Mental Issues and opposite personalities and Values even outside of Music, and because of Axl insulting Courtney
 
GnR isn’t Grunge since it lacks Hardcore Punk Influence or Indie Influence(Pixies, Sonic Youth)….discounting Chinese Democracy where Axl said that Smells like Teen Spirit Influenced that Album
 
Then again Alice In the Chains didn’t have any Punk or Indie influence either

I just want to say it’s been like 7 years but a very underrated rap lyric is “I’ll be flipping birds like a chicken breast on a spatula.”
