So, I just saw Booksmart today. Very witty, very heartfelt high school comedy. (And y’all know I’m not a fan of the whole high school movie subgenre, so it’s saying something that I enjoyed it that much.)
Good to see that Olivia Wilde is already making such a good name for herself as a director.
I just have to ask, though: I saw people on IMDb and in another chat I’m in calling it “SJW propaganda,” and I just gotta ask… how? Like, there was nothing in that film that reeked of propaganda or even particularly left-wing; hell, apart from the fact that one of the two main characters was lesbian, there wasn’t really anything political in it.

Because cashgrabs on popular movie franchises are a thing. If you can pump out a half-assed ripoff of, say, Finding Nemo for $50,000 or so, and make even $1M on it, that’s a huge profit margin.

I saw Ralph 2: Breaks The Internet and I thought it was entertaining. Not a great movie or particularly memorable one since it’s a typical 2010’s animated movie following almost the same beats, but I enjoyed it from start to finish. I think I still prefer the original movie more.

If anyone wants my opinion, I think ILM has a point: Recent (Western) animated movies have almost all followed the same well-trodden plot and style of every other one. To me, it’s a dumbing-down of the animated media, where we are starting to demand less and less from studios, since children don’t really care, and parents will buy the tickets anyway.

I mean, your take is rather extreme, but I see it as a decade trend for animated films, just like how the 90’s was nothing but Disney era fairytale movies while the 2000’s was more CGI experimental films to try and copy Dreamworks. Unpopular opinion, but I don’t mind the fact that a lot of films are doing this style and plot and I’m going to be biased here, but I’ve always liked stories where characters visit new places and meet new characters along the way. I’m not denying that it’s gotten oversaturated and cliched and dare I say it holds back originality, but I eat that stuff up anyway.
