Yeah, but most of the events are telling the story, just really out of order.

@neutralgrey
It’s not too bad once you play for a little while. The big things to keep in mind beyond levelling your ships/equipment are keeping track of your oil/gold and only spamming construction during limited-time events.

The construction events? If you look at the build menu, there are always three categories: light, heavy, and special, corresponding to the different types of ships you have a chance to roll for (destroyers/cruisers, cruisers/battleships, and cruisers/carriers/submarines/repair ships, respectively). Normally, you just want to build one light a day (which runs a slight profit) but every so often, (like right now) there’s also the event category. If it’s available, that’s the category you want to spend your cubes on, since it’s the usually the only* opportunity to get the limited-time ships, and odds are you’ll wind up getting a decent number of the ships from other categories in the process.

There are also limited time ships you can get from event drops (purely luck based, just keep playing the level until she appears) and event missions (usually easy, if a little grindy). There’s a few of those going on at the moment: you can get Bataan from earning enough points in the event stages, San Juan from burning enough oil, and Cavalla by exchanging points in the event shop. If you want to see how those are going, click on the event icon from the main menu (Baltimore’s face, at the moment).

*(Limited time ships are usually added to the regular build pools eventually, but that can be a while and your odds are best during their initial events.)

Iron Blood science in this game. They’re the Germans.

Japanese are referred to as the Sakura Empire.

The US as the Eagle Union.

Royal Navy is Britain.

Vichya Dominion is France.

Eastern Radiance = China

North Union - you guessed it. Russia/USSR

There are several other collab factions from past limited events like the Neptunia faction and the Virtual YouTuber Kizuna Ai one.
Bilibili and Utawarerumono too.

I heard it is some outside evil force like in Kancolle but this time also corrupting some shipgirls on it side.

Germany is not good candidate for main enemy based on WW2 navy stuff anyway

There’s also Iris Libre, for non-Vichy France.

Short answer: you’re primarily playing from the perspective of the Eagles fighting the Sakura, who are aligned with/under the control of the Sirens. Iron Blood is also aligned with the Sirens, but since they’re over in the Atlantic, you only see them during events. Even though the factions are the bad guys, individual IJN or KMS ships may still be good guys, either in the story or just because you have them in your dock.

Long answer (as far as I know, the story isn’t 100% clear): The ultimate villains are these guys, the Sirens:

They appeared sometime in the distant future and pretty much steamrollered humanity. Apparently that was too boring, so they went back in time and started messing with history, most notably by introducing shipgirl technology to humanity. After that happened, the major navies of the world formed the “Azur Lane” alliance for mutual defense against the Sirens. That went along fine until the Sakura (nominally led by Nagato, but effectively controlled by the fox sisters, Akagi and Kaga) and Iron Blood (led by Bismarck) split off, formed “Crimson Axis,” and allied with the Sirens. Those two factions always had a different idea of how humanity should be using/developing shipgirl tech, and eventually their overall mindset shifted to believing that an alliance with the Sirens was the best way forward. (You can see the factions’ philosophical differences approached in how the girls look: the Allies preferred to keep their technology as human-designed as possible, so they’re mostly normal humans with normal looking rigging, the Sakura mixed magic with their shipgirl development, so they’re animal or oni girls with normal or magical looking rigging, and Iron Blood tried to go as close as possible to the Sirens’ technology, so they have bio-mechanical monsters for rigging.)

Not all of the individual shipgirls followed their faction (like Akashi or Mikasa), and as time goes on, some of them defect back and start fighting the Sirens again (like the crane sisters, Zuikaku and Shokaku). The Axis ships in your dock either fall into one of those categories or are clones/reborn versions of enemy ships. I’m not exactly sure how that last one works, though.

(If you haven’t, I’d highly recommend it- It’s pretty fantastic, even if the RWBY-esque animation takes some getting used to.)

This may be my AOTY and is definitely AOTS (I rarely give those titles away). CGI character animation is something to get used to, especially when clashed with hand drawn animation (if they do those seperatly in different scenes its fine) At least its better than studio previous work. Characters are cool and fun, plot is good, setting is interesting but plane battles are amazing. CGI animation of plane or other mechanic stuff was really good (this is reason why we need CGI in anime), choreography and directing (including sound directing) were great. This may make it best dogfight scenes at all even beyond anime, this is by guy behind GuP and he delivered once again.

Yeah, I loved the dogfights, and the attention to detail was awesome- I think I was hooked from the startup sequence in the first episode. And I don’t normally notice things like sound design, but Kotobuki’s was incredible. The fun characters and plot were almost just icing on the cake at that point.

Got her too. She’s going to be a special kind of crazy, isn’t she?

I’ve never played Girls Frontline; would this make more sense if I was already familiar with the characters? And was that in Chinese?
