The Ursa Major is much smaller, and looks completely different, but it’s an illusion.

Starlight is pretty powerful when emotionally centered too. More so really, because she’s not a bad tactician when she’s thinking straight.
 
…bit like Vegeta. Sure he’s more powerful when he’s emotional, but he also tends to make dumb decisions. Where as on the other hand he’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for when he’s actually focused.

She actually explains that it was her hatred of cutie marks that gave her the power boost to make her cutie mark magic work, Maud helped her with the rock, I’m fairly sure she had some help for the Time Travel spell (she did spend a long time in Canterlot beforehand) and her mind control spell was far stronger than she intended and ultimately backfired.
 
I’m not saying she’s outright bad, but I don’t think her intellectual laziness and tendency towards broad assumptions helps her when it comes to raw academia.

I definitely think Twilight’s always been better at magic. It’s just that Twilight’s a research mage, and Starlight’s a combat mage. The fact that Twilight can still match Starlight one on one in Starlight’s speciality is impressive enough.
 
On the other side of the equation, Cadance and Mage Meadowbrook seem better at research than Starlight is, and they’re not even unicorns.

I am pretty sure Tirek realised that trying to take the Princess’s magic would have caused a fight between them, especially after Cozy lay claim to it.
 
Honestly he was powerful enough already considering he was dominating their whole army at the end, and had two powerful allies backing him up. Encouraging the other two to turn on him was a high price to pay for a power up he didn’t really need.

Sweetie does seem to have a genuine interest in magic, where as Rarity sees it as a tool at best. She’s not very good at it true, but then neither was Twilight when she was younger.

I feel people have forgotten that Sweetie is explicitly shown learning magic from Twilight. She’s likely been trying to pull of teleportation ever since Twilight good naturedly explained to her the fundamentals.
 
Now Sweetie doesn’t specifically have a magic cutie mark, but pulling off a very short ranged, uncontrolled, painful version of her teacher’s signature spell isn’t exactly a leap of logic even with the rules Boast Busters established.

In canon, it’s her speed that’s most often commented on. I mean we don’t have many feats, but I wouldn’t put this past her (especially with plenty of time to prepare).

You do have to consider tone. Pinkie being too out there makes it difficult to use her in a serious matter, which would make her mood breaking in tenser moments. In a short, slice of life show however you can let her run a bit wilder.

Honestly the Storm King would make a pretty poor member of his gang anyway. He’s not particularly powerful on his own, and is arrogant, crazy, egotistical and smart enough that he’d inevitably try to backstab Grogar and quite possibly succeed enough to mess up something important.
 
He doesn’t bring enough to the table to be worth the bother. Cozy at the very least can be stomped on fairly easily if she gets too annoying.
