lol, 9 years late and only saw it because of the new comment.

a lot of people will get a sketchbook but because they suck they will not use it because they need a good idea, and will end up not drawing because of that and it acts as a bit of an endless cycle of needing to draw, not drawing. the advice to just draw, is just that just draw, stop asking how and just do it. what I recommend is a bit more structured, get some news print, its paper that has 0 archival value and will likely not survive muck longer than you dying, so there is no ‘I have to make a masterpiece’ mentality, and I tell people to draw realism mixed with contours and shadow mapping. that means that they draw from a photo or something, they have a direct way to compare and self critique, and by mapping shadows, they are working on values without pissing copious amounts of time polishing turds, by the time they out grow this they will have a better understanding on what to do next so self search.

is no one going to talk about how all the toys are behind bars?

Oh, I just said that its most common in games, because they are rendering it real time, and big studios moved to individual hair stand sims because the render farms that can do a month of rendering in 10 minutes
 
the way they do it for games is they have a hair/fur image, they make the background transparent and put the hair onto a 3d shape… here

its a technique usually used in games, however it saves so much time in rendering that many use it in home/small studio 3d

If thats what I think it is, in the main its a texture that is following a hair sim curvature… cant say its the best method because it will likely look like hair coming off a main blob rather then a mane… could work, don’t know.  
the fur on the face is again, a bunch of small planes that you attach a texture to, something with a transparent layer, this is a method that is less processor intensive then simming every strand, it looks like its not placed at random so it may also have some of the ‘hair sim’ that the mane did done to it to with a bit of jitter.
 
that’s at least my best guess. looking at the link, i’m pretty sure i’m right on what happened. the artist then had flat textures applied, figured out it looked cool, and there you go, you got luna a bit stylized, a bit pinata looking, but not bad.

I know its zbrush, but the principas apply to any 3d software just how it is done changes. Its ‘simplified’ a bit, but if you do any kind of hair sim, you are largely doing the same things just different methods, I think this will help in the future.  
also, for any texture you do, plan out a final render size, and part out how big certain things will be. That eye if I had to take a guess, is either high enough resolution but you made it very soft, an effect im not sure goes well with the sharp lines of a rendered 3d, or the resolution is to small and has an aa pass on it of sorts, given the size of the eye I think it could have done with a 1024x1024 texture.

if they prolong the riots they can actually cause a real civil unrest, not the pandemic the shelves at stores aren’t completely full, but an everything is shut down indefinitely.
 
Now, when the right has an extreme actor, they purge them, they don’t accept them into their cause, they may not take the speech away, but they disavow on all fronts.  
the left however tacitly supports the fringe, antifa, as a diversity of tactics, an ‘oh no, this black clad individual did some bad things, they are on our side (they really think that) but its not ME, it’s not MOST of us, we just don’t participate.’ all while benefiting from their actions.
 
this is going to blow up in everyone on the left face harder then they ever realize.
 
do you want to talk about cops? yea, I think their training in america is bad, they are trained on the situation where they pull someone over and get shot in the head for it, a situation they can’t avoid, but they are trained based on that… that needs to end, and the supreme court saying a cops job is not to protect or server, but to enforce laws and nothing else, that needs to go as well. the thin blue line… I don’t thing that will ever go away in cities, but I think full 24/7 body cams and on camera all the time, possibly even uploaded online for people to scrub and possibly report, that would do quite a lot
 
and as for why its always one side, and you don’t see the other, it’s because all of social media is far left, any dissenting opinion is banned or gets you banned, it’s sad when the west censors more then the middle east at this point, but that’s where we have gotten to.

for people asking for single lines,  
drawing a single line that is good takes FAR more effort then combine ing tons of thinner ones. You need a good grasp of line weight and where to use it thick and thin, while tons of smaller lines like this give an approximate line weight and lets you see about what you want easier.
 
for artist  
if you want an opinion on the blended, try a bit more contrast where the lines would be, nothing that looks out of place but something that shows a line would be there more, especially because it is an ass the light source for the ass looks like it would be hitting about the cutie mark area, so there is no real reason the the inner left side of the crack would be as bright as it is.
 
If you want to practice lighting, try to find reference that has a singular hard light source when it comes to rendering lighting is a big thing you have to start taking into account and even a rudimentary understanding of how it works makes a night and day difference.

in all honesty, anyone who has even a small following online could leverage a patreon to get money, and then torrents to put out videos and a mega account to host an archive.
 
you may not get the same discoverability as youtube, but the means to make it work is already there, so if youtube died tomorrow I wouldn’t worry to much. on that note, youtube will never go away even if it is fully in the red and they make no profit because the clout they get by shaping opinion is too powerful.

somehow, youtube doing this across a large portion of content is going to push things like dissenter or whatever company does the ‘comment anywhere’ idea next. here’s hoping it won’t be full of morons smearing it so it actually has a chance to take off.

no, mlp was due for a new series due to lapsing interest, so they hired someone known for making cartoons good even with more simplistic animation, however she accidently resonated with an audience far older than intended.

that was the most likely method I was thinking of.  
I also considered given some of the older ones with out hairs modeled, that it may have been a really high detail shape that got extruded.
 
The other thing im curious about was if this used a ‘real time’ render method (lets call anything sub 20 seconds a frame real time) or if this is a ray/path traced thing. depending on how much you are willing to set up, I could see either method being viable.

a lot of animation, especially small projects end up being made/done in real time engines, with effects that cant be done ‘real time’ with time to bake
 
as for this… to do the whole show in 3d, you would need to have standard animations that all characters would use, and possibly face map some standard expressions that would be able to be dropped in and smoothed over. the process of animating 2d is largely the same as 3d, what changes is render times and aesthetics. 2d can get cranked out relatively fast on the render side, while 3d will take some time, while 3d allows you access to some physics controlled things so you have to take less time hand animation everything, culling to make the object look good sure, but generally easier to iterate then hand.
 
Its interesting to look into 3d animation and 2d animation, rigging and animating…
 
take pinkies hair, there are ways to do that with individual strands, there are also ways to fake it with FAR less process intensive means, I can’t tell for sure exactly what was done here from the final animation, due to youtube and gifs not being ideal for maintaining quality. looking at the deviant art page, it looks like they could have gone strands from the renders, but there are a few ways I know to fake strands on solid objects… I dont have the model and don’t really care enough at the moment to seek it out and open it, but there are ways to sage time in renders, and with some physics engines, gta4 I think used something called euphoria which would keep things trying to maintain a center of balance, I think you could get a fairly good pinkie with a mix of that and hand animation areas.
 
also, look into rigging a human, there are ways that you can freely move hands and stuff around that moves the entire arm along with it… as long as you aren’t going for 100% perfection, you can get good results out of that.

It takes less time then you would think.  
generally a perfect scene, through full ray/path tracing takes around 2-2.5 hours a frame at 4k (I believe) if you are doing things at a hobby level (movies typically demand FAR more and some single frames have taken 300+hours but render farms are a thing for a reason)  
from here you can usually cut down that time down fairly significantly with denoisers, allowing you to go from needing real samples to being able to get most of it right with very few, taking a 2-2.5 down to 10-15 minutes  
animation however does not pair well with per frame denoisers, which is where you can save more time by going from 3d program to composting and using a video degrainer, these do FAR better with animation then per frame denoise and are on par if not better then per frame solutions
 
3 seconds, not saying its 60fps, so im guessing 30, possibly 24 if youtube doesn’t tell you that in fps anymore, but let’s assume 30. it could be anywhere from just shy of 200 hours for full renders, to around 99 if the pc is beastly.  
with denoise 9 hours to 1 day
 
as a point of personal preference I like game engines/real time/semi real time rendering more than I like raytraced just due to being able to get things done in real time opposed to needing to render things out forever, mixed in with a well done scene that knows how to hide its flaws will look close enough to ray traced to not matter.  
personally, I would load a scene up and let it do things that may take it 5-10 seconds a frame, but keep in mind what current game engines do in real time. but granted it’s been a very long time since I did anything 3d outside of dicking around with sculpting, there may be some newer things i’m missing that subtract more time or cause things to take longer, but my understanding is everyone is doing denoise due to the drastic cost savings.
