I’m sure this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but fuck it. I’m so sick of this shit happening to people, some need to learn how to be civil. So here I go making enemies.
So I recently discovered the whole “Sodiav” issue, despite my following his Tumblr which he has since nuked over allegations of his abuse of someone he knew.
According to a single Tumblr post, Sodiav is a big jerk who was mean to one of his friends and now he is the newest heel of the fandom. Well I got news to everyone reading this, mostly to the person who made the original post: Tumblr isn’t 911. It isn’t your personal emergency contact service that will help solve all your problems. You can’t (and shouldn’t) make these overly long allegations or claims about people without clear enough evidence or even the chance for the person who’s name you are dragging through the mud to defend against or validate any of your accusations. All it does it promote a single perspective, your perspective, about an issue that skews what might have been a completely benign complication.
But now we have this, Sodiav apparently made some mean comments about his friend being bisexual and suddenly he is some gay basher. According to some out of context screenshots from a private (remember when that word used to mean something) conversation, none of which is given proper context, we are told he is some horrible gay hating monster that we should all hate because of ONE GUY’s testimony. None of his claims are able to be validated, by the way. I read the post he made, and it’s horribly distorted to favour his side over Sodiav in order to paint the narrative of “Sodiav is a horrible monster that you all need to hate.”
And once this post was hit, you all were hooked and spread it like wildfire. Sodiav has gone into full apology mode, deleted his Tumblr and likely all other forms of social media and has been ruthlessly shamed by the community and will probably never come back. So good job everyone, you took one guy’s side of a story as the undeniable truth and ran full force with it. The CNN approach, as I call it.
Which brings me to point two: people need to stop promoting and glorifying other people’s personal drama. Conversations and exchanges between people in private should stay just that. Private. Doesn’t matter who is involved or what it was about, if you aren’t involved, stop trying to stoke the flames. You are not helping.
If this situation was as serious as this Tumblr post lead us to believe, then the OP should have gone to authorities or to a counsellor or someone of a higher mind and discussed it with them. Or just kept it private between him and Sodiav. It was their issue, and theirs to solve. None of us needed to know about, but here we are with his accounts deleted and his reputation thoroughly ruined.
What bugs me the most is how, once again, we have fallen into the trappings of the notion that everyone needs to think the same way about an issue, otherwise they are labelled as some bigoted degenerate. Not all of us share the same opinions about gay/bisexual/trans/etc. people. And that’s is fine. We don’t all think the same, and we shouldn’t. I don’t give a shit whether or not Sodiav likes or dislikes gay or bi people. I can disagree with his opinion, but that doesn’t mean I have to hate him for it. It’s his opinion and he has the right to have it. Did he handle the situation with his friend in the best manner? Probably not, but again, we weren’t given the full extent of the conversation, just some out of context screenshots and that’s it. But nope, all it takes is for one section of a private conversation from one guy’s perspective and suddenly Sodiav is a homophobic bigot we all need to hate.
I’m so sick and tired of people using Tumblr as their personal fix-all-my-problems service. All the rants, allegations, accusations, claims and posts about people being dicks without any evidence or context and we get these drama riddled publicity stunts that end with one or more people getting their lives ruined because someone didn’t have the clear conscience to deal with their own problems like an adult. Instead they whine to the internet, expecting us to deal with their dirty laundry, and we get drama, drama, fucking high school level drama.
I expected better of this fandom. I expected better from some of those I consider a higher caliber of character. I know I’m not the most popular guy around, I know that I can agitate people with my opinions and I’m sure to ruffle a few feather here. But at the end of the day, personal issues should stay just that. Personal. Only involving those directly involved and no one else. We have this unhealthy obsession for drama and sensationalist media that we forget that we are all human. We are capable of mistakes and errors in judgement, and there is no justifiable reason we need to blow these aspects about ourselves out of proportion by way of public humiliation and lynching.
So to Sodiav, I say you deserve the chance to defend yourself and shouldn’t have been the subject of this display of utter lack of personal privacy. Your issues are your own and neither I or anyone else in this fandom had any right to be involved in them. Whatever opinions you have are your own, I respect them despite my disagreement, and I hope you can find it in yourself to grace us with your art again one day. I’d hate to see this be the last we ever hear of you.
To everyone else, feel free to disagree with me and tell me how I am just as bad as he is, etc. etc. I don’t fucking care, I am sick and tired of this Tumblr drama getting promoted like it does. People need to learn how to keep private issues private, and we all need to stop letting our emotions supersede logic and reason.
