Well, harpies are quite common species of monster girls in porn…  
Basically, you can look for all of them in MGE (monster girl encyclopedia) if interested. They have done a good work sexualizing almost every kind of monster species xD

I think that on average it’s more about style and content rather than technique or absence of mistakes.  
For example, childishly small-framed slutty-looking pony and focus on it’s genitals will net you around 200 upvotes easily. Or making porn with Princesses 😆  
In my opinion, it’s very cool if you happen to love drawing popular things and good at doing it.

Yeah, you can make up for (in score) a bad drawing with the inclusion of particular fetishes/characters/styles/subject matter that the fandom likes.  
Ex: looking back at my highest upvoted thing here, it’s a quickly and somewhat crudely drawn fluttershy’s ass that has some flaws in how the shapes are drawn. It got a lot of upvotes since people like ass and fluttershy.
