All right.

Someone mentioned GIMP? I use that in conjunction with plain old pencil and paper. Very briefly used Illustrator but that monthly CC subscription fee no thanks.

I’m now going to use Paint Tool SAI. I’ll be practicing before my progression first.

speaking of drawing programs, would anyone recommend photoshop?
 
because i’ve been using SAI for about 3 years now and i can’t help but wonder if photoshop is a better program for drawing. i thought it was a program more suitable for editing photo’s rather than drawing from scratch.  
my main question is:
 
does it have more options and ways of drawing?  
and is it more effecient?

Whilst I don’t have much experience with Photoshop or Paint Tool SAI I have worked with both of them in the past. My problem with SAI is more or less its interface and tool settings with left me with a lot to be desired. It forced me into a single style and while it is an incredibly useful tool and once you’ve gotten over adjusting the settings you can work at an incredible speed I just don’t like having a limited amount of options. Photoshop offers the malleability I like, but the problem is that its a very heavy program in a sense of memory usage and it lags the hell out of my system as well as runs slowly. If the program runs slowly then I cant work efficiently or even at all hence why I don’t use either of them (at least until I get an upgrade on my working system).

I use Fireworks which is very similar to Photoshop and I very heavily recommend it for vector-based work.

yeah, but i’m not really the guy for vectors. they’re usefull for sure, but i’m more for drawing by hand =P

I use a free program called Krita, Its in alpha and a bit buggy but its a carbon copy of photoshop and quite lite on my computer. It also offers the much need versatility I need and allows me to download new brushes to fit my needs. Not many people like it though which is a bit odd for me, but I guess Ive never been one to use more preffered programs. GIMP always crashed on me, SAI didnt exactly tickled my fancy, Photoshop slowed everything to a crawl, Corel Painter didnt offer anti aliasing, Inkscape was fine but it forces me to premeditate and plan every single step of the way which is something Im not fond of doing when Im in “the zone”, and Artrage while it was great for a starter for me with its auto smooth options, it lacked brush options that I knew I needed.

I don’t think Krita is in Alpha anymore. The current download on the site is v3.1.1. I’ve been using 2.9.11 for a while, and haven’t seen any major bugs.

Oooh! Godspeed I’ll be downloading the latest version in a bit. I was told they’d fix a few things in the new version as well as update the software to handle animations better.

I’m currently working on a sweetie belle gang-bang commission. I hope to share it here when it nears completion.
 
However, It’s Anthro foalcon. I know the site is okay with that, but some people in this chat may not be.
